    lee enfield id needed

So i finally got both of these rifles home and know that they are both lee enfields but would like some more input on exactly what models these are.
I am under the impression i received a good deal and paid 300 for both of these rifles. They are far from perfect but seem to be in decent shape and the bores dont look too bad..
Im assuming these are chambered in 303 british and was wondering if they require any specific loadings or if i should check anything specific before firing.
Would also like to know which bayonet fits these rifles as well.
    Thanks for the input.

The rifle looks like a No4Mk1, No4Mk2, or No4Mk1/2 the Mk1 has the trigger attached to the trigger guard while the Mk2 has the trigger attached to the receiver, the Mk1/2 is a Mk1 upgraded to Mk2. The (Jungle) Carbine is a No5Mk1. $300 is an outstanding deal! Bayonets for the No4 used to be sold by surplus stores for use as tent pegs, the correct bayonet for the No5 is rare. Both rifle and carbine were only chambered in 303 British, if you plan on reloading be warned that the chambers of these guns vary widely.

    Cheers,

The last photo may be a No 4 Mk 1/2 which is a No 4 Mk 1 converted to the Mk 2 receiver trigger attachment. The one I saw back in 1992 which I should have bought said something like "No 4 Mk 1/2 FTR" on the receiver (or "body" as they call it). I think the wrist marking, if there was any, was unchanged. Or it may have been blank. I don't really remember that last part. No 4 rifles will accept the No 4 (4 different Mk depending on construction), No 7, and No 9 bayonets. The Jungle Carbine uses the No 5 Mk I bayonet. NOTE: I am sometimes confused by the styling of "1" or "I".

You got an absolute steal on these. Since they look to be all original and not sporterized, each one of the rifles is worth more than $300 alone. You can always have the headspace checked to feel safer. These would very likely close on a "No-Go" gage but not on a "FIELD" gage, if they are typical surplus Enfields. The headspace is adjusted with the replaceable bolt heads so it's fairly easy to remedy a problem.

Nice deal on those 2 rifles. My Dad had a whole bag of "tent peg" Enfield spike bayonets in his camping gear back in the early '60s. Priced at less than a dollar each at the surplus store. Worked better than any actual peg.

The short rifle is a No5 the so-called "jungle Carbine"

              the longer one is a No4 Mk1.

Both were made by Birmingham Small Arms.

              You stole them.

Thanks for narrowing it down for me i cant wait to shoot both of them. The jungle carbine is just a really neat rifle and is my favorite.

Agreed, but I'm no expert on these.

No. 4 Mk1. In fact I think its actually a Mk 1/2 (upgraded refurbishment).
And a No. 5 Jungle Carbine.

Steal for both of them. For reference, I recently paid $700 for a 1942 Maltby No. 4 Mk1. (That was dealer price not private party transfer, seemingly unissued condition, matching, and doesn't appear to have been refurbished). I thought that was a steal or at least a good deal.

                    Excellent buy.

It always puzzles me how sloppy Brit markings are on their weapons.

The markings do look like someone got a bit tipsy before starting.
The jungle carbine is stamped 1943. And the standard length rifle has a hard to read 1944 and the 1/2.
I just think milsurps are so cool currently have these 2 enfields An m1 garand m1 carbine 1903 spring a mosin a k98k and an m16a1 parts kit build.

I would look a little closer at that #5 the butt stock looks more #4.

Also these days an original bayonet can cost almost as much as the rifle.

If the #5 carbine doesn't have reduced receiver side walls around the rear sight, then it is a converted #4. Navy Arms did some of these.

That is DEFINITELY a converted No.4, not a genuine No.5 Jungle Carbine.
                            They are VERY hard kickers.
