I just picked up my first C&R gun on Saturday, now this thing showed up.

Skipped ahead a few decades and crossed over to the Axis powers.

Indeed, I originally thought I would be satisfied with just one example of a particular firearm.

But with so many of these having been made by different manufacturers, how can one be satisfied with one example?

The P38 I picked up is a Mauser, but of course, I need to pick up a Spreewerk and a Walther example.

Even with the 1911s, I know I "need" a WWII 1911A1 to partner with my WWI 1911, but one cannot simply get another Colt. I would need examples from Remington Rand, Union Switch and Signal, Ithaca, and if ever I had the actual means.....find a Singer.

I'm really having more fun researching and seeking out these firearms than I originally anticipated.

I think you will find that the hunt is at least half the fun.

Some twenty-five years ago I acquired a Spreewerk P-38 with spare magazine and the black holster with SS markings on it (the holster, not the gun). All serial numbers match and the grips still have that resin-ish color.

I got it from a man who in April 1945 was a young lieutenant in the US Army when he killed the guy the pistol had been issued to. He'd taken it home and shot it maybe twice in the next 50 years.

He wanted me to have it before he died and I gave him more than a fair price for it.

What a sweet shooter. I know the Beretta 92 series took a lot of its design from the P38, but this old gun shoots just as smooth as all my modern Beretta 92s.

All these new gun folks and the others set on their polymer guns just don't know what they are missing out on.

These war horses may be old and heavy and have a smaller magazine capacity, but they will still get the job done

Walther p38s are great guns alot of the design also closely resembles the modern day berretta 92 and for the time period was also very advanced because of having a loaded chamber indicator and a decocker which quite a few guns didn't have for that time period they are also ALOT easier to shoot than a standard issue army luger which they replaced

And spend several hours at Carol Watson's showroom looking at the stuff going up for auction next weekend.

Yeah, that's a pretty sweet collection there. All Mosins are born pregnant. I've also observed the same tendency with M1 Garands, Swiss 1911/1931's, and other milsurps. They're like the Tribbles from Star Trek, only without the negative reaction to Klingons. :-)
