CMP called me this morning and said I'm next in line for a 1911. Talked to Jeff, very cool guy. He said it would be a 1945 year or earlier. I don't remember my RGN, I'll look for it later today. He said they have up to 90 days to ship but they will try and ship out Monday or Tuesday. It's been a while since I mailed my packet, was very surprised.

CMP is a great organization with a lot of history and a source for firearms previously in use by U.S. Military forces.
WHAT IS THE CIVILIAN MARKSMANSHIP PROGRAM?
The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is a national organization dedicated to training and educating U. S. citizens in responsible uses of firearms and airguns through gun safety training, marksmanship training and competitions. The CMP is a federally chartered 501(c)(3) corporation that places its highest priority on serving youth through gun safety and marksmanship activities that encourage personal growth and build life skills.Comment

What grade would you suggest? I noticed a bunch of people's Field Grade photos that look much nicer than the Service Grade my brother got. They also had better provinence.
I also noticed some of the Field Grades hadn't been arsenal rebuilt. So they didn't have crappy extra stampings on the frame and weren't parkerized.
The Service Grades I've seen have all been rebuilt and parkerized. My brother's has dents, dings, and scratches in the frame, slide, and grips, and a blotchy finish. The arsenal stamping looked like it was done by a 5 year old. Same with the hand scratched arsenal lettering and numbers on the grips. It also has a really roughly machined frame with a deep factory gouge in the side of the frame (looks like someone gouged it with a belt sander). The slide stop is also bumpy and shiny like it was coated in bubbly lacquer. I wasn't impressed to say the least.
Is it better to choose a Field Grade? The ones I've seen photos of online look great! Yours look great except the top left. I'm sure there's a story to that one.Last edited by k1dude; 08-07-2020, 6:41 PM."Show me a young conservative and I'll show you a man without a heart. It's always going to be a crapshoot when you can't examine a firearm in person. I too have seen some decent field grades and I would probably be more inclined to take a chance on one of those. But on the other hand, I have also seen a few really nice service grades, Whichever grade you opt for is going to be what they consider average for that particular grade. As I said it's going to be a crapshoot. What grade would you suggest? I noticed a bunch of people's Field Grade photos that look much nicer than the Service Grade my brother got. They are cherry picking the really good ones to be auctioned off so I doubt you are going to get an all original WWI Remington-UMC or a WWII US&S
Mine were all privately purchased and I was able to inspect them before I made what I considered to be an appropriate offer for them. Some I got real cheap like the near perfect 1917 Colt (second from the top on the left) and others I paid quite a bit more for like the 1942 Colt (top right). I have had all of mine for a while now and what I paid for them at the time seems like a bargain today.MLC member.

Service Grade way to go especially since the mark up is minimal for what you are getting. If you are buying blind CMP is way to go, I’ve seen $450 - 500 SG M1s go for over a $1K at Gun Shows within a year or two, a good investment especially now that they are drying up..........same for the Carbines, 03s and now 1911s. People who play them down are the ones who missed out.Comment

Congrats! My LGS recently received my service grade CMP 1911 and now it's in jail for another ten days. It looks pretty good.Last edited by Nacho_Eater; 08-07-2020, 10:57 PM.I tip 20% for average service.Comment
