How do I date a Mosin receiver, not the barrel date, as a pre 1899?

Some Mosin Nagants were made before 1899. Many of these have barrel dates much later. I understand there to be tang mark or something similar that can identify if the receiver is earlier than 1899 despite the barrel date. Can anyone explain that to me? Thanks

I haven't looked, you might find your information here.

Date is on the tang. Barrel date may be newer. I have a 91/30 with a 1943 barrel date and a 1916 tang date. 1916 is the correct date for the rifle, as it's the receiver manufacture date.

Date a Mosin? First, send her flowers.

          (I'm sorry, just couldn't resist.)

Receiver date may be later than tang date. Go with the tang.

          (And bring candy!).
