    Scope for SKS

Based on typical SKS accuracy and ranges between 50 and 200 yards for 7.62x39, what level of fixed or variable power scope might be appropriate if I want to put a scope on an SKS?

I have a 6X fixed seems sufficient. What mount do you plan to use? There are options.

In general, SKSs don't scope well, and it's kinda of a waste to put good glass on them. But I've got one commercial model that's scoped, with a T89 mount/scope combo that came with a 2.5X Red Star. I removed it a put on a fixed 4X Leapers. Another rifle that came to me pre drilled that I'll be putting a side mount and a fixed 6X on.

      The mount is the key.

There's a couple way to mount a scope to the SKS, all cause some type of marring or permanent modifications.
I have a "Mag Wedge" type mount that was home fabricated, by LESchwartz (SKS Survivors Mod), before the mag wedge came out. Some where on the Survivor Board, there's a detailed posting of it.
There's the Choate side mount made for the SKS.
I've also got an aluminum shotgun side mount that can be made to work. I did it with one already (but not installed yet).
You can also use the receiver cover type with success, IF, you tap a bolt threw the receiver and cover at the same time. If you use this type, don't use the see through mount. Get it as low as you can.

The only military SKS sniper/DMR rifles were the Yugo M59 and M59/66 and used a 4x Zrak On-2 scope attached with a kind of a reverse PU style side mount. They actually work fairly well (SKS accuracy issues aside) for what they are

A bunch of these SKS's were imported drilled and tapped for the mount, some came in with bases (there is one for sale on gunbroker right now) The mounts and scopes are very hard to find and insanely expensive

The scope isn't the real problem you are facing, the scope mount is. No scope, no matter how good it is will hold zero if it is mounted on the receiver cover. The only ones that work are the hot swap-able lateral scope mounts that require drilling and tapping of the receiver. Once you have one of those installed, you can pick any scope you afford, you won't have any problems shooting straight.

What about this mount if I go for a compact red dot instead of a scope?

[Firearms, optics and rings are for display only and NOT included] Compatible with all SKS variants including the Russian, Chinese, Romanian and Yugo SKS including the Yugo Model 59/66.  No drill, no tap, no permanent modification to your SKS rifles Allows easy disassembly and cleaning of the gas tube and dust cover -

Of those type of mounts, it looks like that one has an advantage with the built in back up sight. But you've changed up from scope to Red Dot scout mount. At least it's reversible when you find out why others have said "Don't mess with it". PAX

I have one of those with a small red dot sight. It works just fine. As my eyes get worse, it just gets harder to use the iron sights.

at this range and given the well known inherent bad accuracy of the sks at anything over this range, why put a scope on it at all?

Free floating the barrel and glass bedding the stock inletting can tighten up the sks shot groupings. Given these improvements, if the barrel bore is in good shape, adding a scope isn't necessarily a bad idea. (if you get the right scope, mount, and rail combination)
