    Athens Greece military museum

Just got back from Athens Greece and spent a couple of hours in the Greece Military Museum. I could have spent 4 hours there but the Missus was waiting and was being a good sport so 2 hours max. Three floors of history from the invasion of the Persians to Cyprus.

Start on the third floor and work your way down. I started on the bottom and worked my way up so I got the history in reverse! Many artillery and aircraft displays outside also.

I will post some more pics when I have a chance to download them.

Also attended the changing of the guard and the tomb of the unknown soldier. Crowd control was a lot less formal than at Arlington. Well worth seeing. The M1 rifles carried by the guards looked great.

Very nice. Greece certainly has a storied military history. For me the most interesting was during the early 1900s Balkan Wars where the Greeks teamed up with the Serbians, Montenegrins, and Bulgarians to fight Turkey in Europe. It was the Greek Navy with their state-of-the-art armored cruisers that prevented Turkey from sending reinforcements via the Aegean and forced them to have to march troops from Asia to Europe the long way through Constantinople.

Some random pictures from the museum. It is chock full of stuff from ancient times to modern. The larger items are touchable by visitors even though you aren't supposed to do so!

A few of the outside displays appear to have been recently renovated, the rest are in various stages of deterioration. The small arms are generally in nice shape although I saw one P08 that have some severe surface rust that looked like someone with acidic hands handled it by the barrel to put it in the display case and didn't wipe it down.

            Lastly...

The uniform of a Greek officer who served in Korea; note that everything is U.S. issue including the division patches except for the rank. The jacket has 1st Cav on one shoulder and 3ID on the other.

I have more photos that can be posted if there is interest. I mostly used my cell phone for pictures and that combined with the reflection from the glass front cases made some of the pictures pretty hazy looking.
