Is there a limit to how early one can renew their COE? It is a couple weeks earlier than when I renewed last year but CFARS is not showing an option to renew.

Yes there is, I do not recall the number of days before your expiration which you can renew.

Just want to add that you will need to submit a picture of your California ID when you renew, or it will get kicked out as incomplete. The email I got said this started as of July 1st this year.

Yep, I got the incomplete email as well because of them needing me to upload ID . I called to confirm how they wanted it and the lady said if it was not a real ID that I would need other supporting documents. I have real ID so I did not ask which other documents.

I renewed 2 weeks on Friday, got the email the next Monday for ID, sent pdf scan of ID Monday afternoon, checked Thursday and it was already renewed and ready to print... pretty quick!

Then you are either not looking in the right place, or there is some issue with your COE. It always gives me the option exactly 60 days before expiration.

There was a phone number either in the email or the CFARS COE page, I called right after I got the email to make sure I sent the correct info that they would accept. The lady that answered was extremely helpful and nice. It might be worth it to call in the morning to make sure that is all you need.

I have the older DL that doesn't say federal limits apply. Just renewed my coe and it went through and renewed with just my DL.

Wish I checked this thread prior to submitting my renewal last night. Got a kick back this afternoon saying I needed to include ID. I have one of the older CA DL that doesn’t have the “Federal Limits Apply” moniker.

Think I’ll scan a PDF with that license, and my passport ID card just to be safe.

My license is old school too, not a REAL ID. My COE renewal went through fine last month - just upload a picture of the license. No passport needed.
