I picked up an Eddystone sport job for $300 bucks several years ago. The seller was asking $500. I contacted him immediately a threw 3 hunnerd out there as a standing offer. Three months later he took it.

It was nicely done, and no metal had been harmed. The main reason I went after it, was I had picked up furniture from an estate sale, and could bring it back. I haven't done it yet, but now I've got one for dirt. PAX

I've got a couple of sported 1917's which have intact metal. Getting a decent uncut stock is always the issue. Much harder than finding an 03 or A3 stock.

To each his own, I think 1917s look beautiful. I think the 1903 looks too much like every other bolt rifle made over about 50 years. I like things which stand out more, or are a bit unique.

The 1917s are great shooters if they're in good shape, I don't think that price is too over the top depending on condition these days. Do look at parts though, my Remington has quite a few Eddystone marked parts, including the stock. I'm not sure how common that is for those two, but I didn't care about "all matching".

Exactly. Knowing I had furniture, was what kept my good eye out for a nicely done sport. That estate sale heap, has helped me come out ahead a few times, and helped a couple Gunners too.

On a side bar, if I find a 1917 sporter that's had irreversible work done (for dirt of course), with a cut down stock, I can built a nice retro Bubba. My sport job's stock shows some wood working skills, Monty Carlo comb, pistol wrist, extended butt and recoil pad. Obviously done by a craftsman in the '50s.

To find one like this would be ideal. Then you'd end up with a great shooter and more stock furniture for another salvage. PAX

This one is an Eddystone with a High Standard barrel. Sharp, shiny and tight bore. About a "0" on the CMP muzzle gauge.

This one is a Winchester. Has a "W" marked barrel and is a little over "1" on the CMP gauge. I have a "W" marked stock for it.

Just looked at two M1917s today in Moreno Valley. The outsides were really nice but not the bores.

When I buy a used rifle the bore has to be very good.

The dude also had a really nice 03A3 set up for long range shooting. I bet the sights cost as much as the rifle.

I had an Eddystone for some time, sold it, and soon regretted it. I did find a replacement, but letting go of the first one was an error.

When I look on back on some of the C&R pieces I let go while my FFL03 was still current, I feel the need to kick my own arse.

I feel the same way about vehicles I let go. 2 Sunbeam Tigers, 3 Hillman Huskys, 3 AMXs, 4 VW split window buses. That's like over a couple hunnerd grand these day. More than the planes I've fluttered away. PAX
