You are a very thoughtful guy who is lucky to have a fiance that shares the same passion. I'm sure whatever you end up getting will please her. Have fun shooting together!

Judging by the name Stephanie I think you have it backwards.

Anyway, check out http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Dances_With_Wolves for a list of all the firearms in the movies. The great thing about those antique old west type firearms is many can be ordered to your door, so you can truly surprise him. The Colt 1851 Navy was a .36 caliber revolver, some modern replicas make them in .44 but the historically accurate replica would be a .36

You are also in luck because the Henry firearms company makes an accurate and very high quality modern day replica and has the original company name. This is a modern cartridge firearm and would require all the same paperwork and background checks as modern firearms, but you should have no problem having a dealer order it for you and I suppose you could surprise your fiance by driving him to do the paperwork while pretending you are taking him somewhere else. Just remember to pack his firearm safety card if he has one, to make the buying process a bit quicker. The neat thing about the Henry company is they also offer personalized engraving services which might be icing on the cake for a special gift. There are a few other companies that make replicas of the same rifle, Uberti is one that comes to mind

You are a very thoughtful fiance, and I hope you have a good job because that Henry rifle clone is not cheap. I have drooled over a few in my time but couldn't get over the sticker shock. They are beautifully made though.

The (original) Henry was originally offered in .44 rimfire. The new-made repos are made in .44-40 because .44 rimfire is extremely scarce today. .44-40 is easy-peasy to find. Makes for easy shooting but not historically correct. And yes, the '51 Colt Navy came only in .36 caliber as has been mentioned previously.

They are not cheap but they are very well made, in America, and have a lifetime guarantee. They are definitely heirloom quality and will last several lifetimes. I have experience with Uberti revolvers and they are fairly nice. Well enough made but they leave some aspects a bit to be desired cosmetically, some rough machine marks and fitting. I don't know how their rifles compare.
