Where to get .44 Ball and Caps ???

Just got a Nice Brass Frame full size .44 B.P. pistol

Vietnam Vet friend passed and the Family did not know what to do with it

" I would like to buy it ,, Nice remembrance piece "

So ,, Now I am looking for the Lead balls and percussion caps
No at Tunners , Ammo Bros , West Coast Ammo

Also should I get the .416 or .454 size ?

I have half a can of ff powder/ I had one of these pistols years back .
And I used a .44 Spl as measurer for powder

You want .454. get wonder wads in .44 cal as well. Couldn’t find either in the L.A. area so I ordered from Midway.

I’m told that brass doesn’t hold up to full power loads (30gr FFFg) so I would shoot light loads in it.

Bass Pro. Almost always .454 but my buddy has an old repro that likes .451

Start at .454 and if it's really hard to get them down the bore you can always go down next time.

Brass frame works well with 22 grains all day long. You can go 30 "safely: (cylinder won't blow up) but it will stretch the frame over time.

You might wanna throw about 10 grains of malt 'o meal or corn meal on top of the powder load before the wonder wad, because you'll be seated very deeply with that light powder load.

I am giving grain amounts in FFFG real Black Powder. Substitutes may vary, I've always used the real stuff in my revolvers.

You will want .454 for your gun, or .451 at the smallest. Definitely not .416 that is way too small. Check Sportsman's Warehouse or Bass Pro like suggested above, they should have what you need. Try to buy one of each brand of primer cap if you can, even though they are supposed to be the same size, they seem to fit differently. I can't remember which one is smaller, but CCI or Remington #10 caps are not the same size. One of them will be a tighter fit and one will fall off easily until you squish it with your fingers. Once you know which one fits best for your revolver you can stock up on that brand the next time you go.

I have an 1860 Army Colt. I use Hornady .457 round balls, CCI 11 caps, 30 grains of FFg, and greased .44 wads.

Powder Valley sells black powder. The Hornady round balls and the wads can be found at Midway and Brownell's.

You will also need a grease to put over the top of the ball.
