Anybody recognize this proof mark stamped on a 1914 era Colt Government model mixmaster I acquired recently?colt.jpg

It's kind of out of focus and looks like it might be a double strike, but in 1914 there were only two inspectors at Colt. So, it might be either "WGP" (Walter G. Penfield, Major, Inspector of Ordnance, 2, Jan, 1911-30, Sept, 1914), serial numbers from 1-101500 or "GHS" Gilbert H. Stewart, Major, Inspector of Ordnance, 30 Sept, 1914-12 Jan, 1918, serial numbers from 101500 230000.

My 1914 1911 was made at Springfield Armory so it won't have Major Penfield's stamp, but I do have a Colt with Major Gilbert's. Your frame's serial number will, of course determine which it should be.

      Highpower,

You are correct about it being a double strike, but this is on a Government Model so it did not get proofs from US ordnance inspectors. Sorry about the fuzzy picture.

I misunderstood your post and thought it was a USGI gun. If its a commercial Government Model, then it’s most likely a Canadian Government property mark.

Yep, hopefully I can come across a slide and barrel for it that will get it closer to its original configuration. If not, it still will be a interesting plinker.
