    Name That C&R

A little test of the Calguns Collective Intelligence.

    Identify this semi-auto C&R rifle:

That is correct. That didn't take long at all.

The preferred rifle of lawmen and prison guards in the early 20th Century. Chambered only in .351 SL (self loader). The M1 Carbine was said to of been based on this rifle. Many of the holes in the Bonnie & Clyde "Death Car" were .351 caliber.

I'd never heard of it until I found this one. The knob at the rear of the receiver is the takedown bolt. You cycle the action with the push rod under the barrel.

      Here's the full rifle.

Very nice! I had a Unique model 51 .22 rifle that looked exactly like a scaled down M1907.

The standard magazine was 5 rounds.

The police versions were were available with 10 round magazines that had to be factory fitted. I don't think there were any 20 rounders. It is a fairly large diameter round, and the single stack 10 round was pretty long.

They are blowback operated, with a forward bolt extension inside the foreend to add reciprocating weight.

What looks like a tubular magazine is a plunger that cycles the bolt. The knob at the end turns to lock open the action.

It would only work with one caliber, bullet weight, and load. The earlier model (1905) was .35 SL, a lighter cartridge. The Model 1910 used .401 SL

Looks similar to the Remington Mod 8 designed by Browning around the same time. Different operation though. Mod 8 was recoil operated I believe.

The Remington Model 8 shot 35 Remington as well (among others). Interesting that it shot similar caliber to this rifle.

They are nice rifles. I've got two 1905 models, one in .32 and .35 winchester self loading calibers. unfortunatly they are prisoners of thier own design, meaning you can only load a specific bullet weight and are very limited on powder charge variation. Given that mine will put the bullet in the black at 100 yards without much effort.
Still looking for a nice '07 and maybe a 1910 one day.

Well I was close, got my Remingtons and Winchesters mixed up:http://www.sightm1911.com/lib/history/hamer_guns.htm

I've always wanted a 351 though, just haven't made the jump yet.

                            I've got one.

Not cheap to shoot, I've got a 100 pieces of brass that I keep closely guarded.

BTW, if anyone ever decides to fully takedown their 1907, shoot me a PM first. I will save you a lot of time and headache.
