    M18 smoke grenade legal?

I apologize if this is posted in the wrong place.

Strictly theoretically speaking, if a guy I know may have a M18 smoke grenade in the original sealed tube and live as far as I know, is it legal to possess in CA?

I've searched for answers and the opinions are all over the place. Thanks in advance!

I think not. Smoke grenades are pyrotechnics, which are generally illegal unless excepted (for us unlicensed types).

Excepted items must be approved by the state fire marshal.

AFAIK military items are not so excepted.

The BattleField Smoke Grenade (BFG) is the largest smoke grenade for paintball and airsoft. The BFG features a recessed smoke port and a powerful 3 minute burn to cover a large area QUICKLY.

As we do not see them for sale very often, and the prices are crazy high, I would either get some dummy ones.... or Paintball versions...

I'm sure they might be treated like all other safe & Sane fireworks and most likely prohibited in CA until July 4th in cities that approve of fireworks

occasionally you will find people selling their expired boating safety stuff.... Coast Guard required all flares to be current... My friends who boat explain that they cannot "use" flares except for an emergency and there is no way to dispose of them....

I'd be more concerned about it being stolen government property. I'm unsure if the operation is the same, but I've seen civilian smoke grenades for sale in the past. As far as I know, M18's have never been available to civilians. I'd recommend your hypothetical friend keep it to himself and save it for a rainy day.

The M18 smoke grenade is considered a DD under CA laws [PC 16460(a)(2)] and requires a CA DOJ Dangerous Weapons permit for DD to be CA legal [PC 18900].

Common misconception is that because it is a smoke grenade it is CA legal as a emergency signal device.

The Marine next door when I was growing up used to give us expened M18 smoke grenades and M60 machinegun links and 7.62 NATO empty brass to play with. Hope he didn't get in trouble for it.
No, I don't think I'll ever get over Macho Grande.

If he took them off the range he was breaking the rules - petty as it may seem.

Only if so approved by state fire marshal. It's pretty strict.
