    m44 stays cool!

looking for some feedback on m44 after firing 20 to 30 rds in 5 min span. does your m44 get hot or stay cool. note my m44 is a polish version, but theses guns were built with soviet machinery. so i assume that the russian built ones have the same barrel and reciever dimensions. compared to my russian 91/30 which starts getting hot after about 6 to 10 rds ands starts sweating oil from the stocks. my theory is the m44 bayonet acts as a heat sink and absorb alot of the heat and dissapates it over the exposed bayonet. what your experience?

I don't really understand what you're asking for.

The last time I took my 91/30 out, I shot about 75 rounds as fast as I could reload and operate the weapon. By the end, it was cool enough that I could still hold the handguards.

basically asking do you see a difference between the m44 & 91/30 regarding heat build up around barrel area. if you fire 75 rds as fast as you can i doubt you are going too hold that rifle farther forward were the handguards are skinny and your not getting heat mirages off the top of the barrel.

the carbines don't burn all the powder in the bore, so they don't retain as much heat.

The handguards work very well, I can hold the rifle by them after quick fire while there is cosmo bubbling out. I do avoid touching the barrel, but I have by accident once and it isn't that hot on my m91/30s.

With light reloads in my M44, I noticed that just fired cases are completely cool to the touch. The chamber is just a really good heat sink.

Hmmm, images of a CPU heatsink involving an m44

good point alex$, all that powder that doesn`t burn in the barrel is energy and energy equal heat. i would say that majority reason for coolness of the m44. i love the fireball that comes out of the m44, you can even see it during the daytime!

so you guys got me started, I had a crappy day at work and brought an m38, m44 and a 1923 m91/30 out to the range because the 30 was shooting 3' high at 100m.

Got the kinks worked out, put about 160 rounds through all three, they started shimmering and the oil and cosmo was sweating out, the receiver and barrel could still be touched, though they were warm.

Me, people kept staring when I was shooting the carbines! They looked at me with that stunned, "WTF!!!" look on their face.

The peach was the retiree couple who pulled up 3 stalls down, started their maintenance shooting of their small arms, (for HD I would guess) they were not wearing hearing protection. The wife stopped, turned, looked at me with a "What was that cannon" look. She then started holding her ears after 5 rounds. She then sought out some ear plugs. About that time the husband put some on as well. (mind you they were 50' away)

forgot too mention the racket this m44 makes, i have too wear ear plugs under my electronic earmuff to keep it from ringing my ears. comes close in noise too my #5 enfield. that one just gave me headache from concussion waves.

I normally wear 33 earplugs and the m38/m44 will still ring my ears. I just bought what I thought would be near worthless 23 electronic muffs and be damned if they didn't work fine. (aside from the sweaty ears)
