91/38 or 91/24? Worth the money

So I have the opportunity to buy a carcano for really cheap and was considering restoring it to its original condition. I'm unsure what model it is. Also would this be a good investment?

What's "really cheap?" $1? Great investment!

Yup, I'd buy it. As for "restoring?" I know nothing about Carcanos, but I unless there are improper or missing parts, I wouldn't do anything more than clean and oil it. "Restoring" usually only removes patina, character, and history.

I'm thinking 91/24 since the 91/38 just had the fixed sight. This one looks like it has the base for the old adjustable rifle sight. How long is the barrel?

I don’t know much about Carcanos, but I’d roll the dice on it at $50

Hmmm, all I see are stocks for the 91/38, and they are selling for 150. You would need a rear sight, stock, front bands? Not sure what else. I think all those parts with screws would be around 200 to 250, if you ever find the right stock.

Unless you really want a Carcano, I would pass. Assuming it is 6.5, ammo is hard to find (and they are not easy to reload for since they are not .264 like every other 6.5mm round), the en-bloc clip thing is a bit of a pain. Even if you do want a Carcano, you can probably find a better complete example for well under what it would take to get that back in fighting trim.

I picked up a complete and decent shape M91/38 Cavalry Carbine for $175 a couple years ago.

                    Its 19.5 inches
Were there original rifles with that length barrel? My carbine is ~17.5", I think the only other short rifles were ~21", the rest were much longer.

I didnt check to see if any of the sellers ship to California, but alot of Carcano carbines sold on Gunbroker for about 150-350. They looked complete and in nice shape. I think you will put that much or maybe more in restoring this one. I wouldn't do it. If you really want one look for a Cavalry Carbine with folding bayonet because they are cool and very affordable.
