My son bought a 1916 Spanish Mauser...

missing the bolt. It also doesn't have sights, but has scope mounts. The tag reads .308. I need a starting point helping find the correct bolt. Thanks.

Bolts are not difficult to find online, but you will need a gunsmith to make sure that it is safe to use in that rifle. Unless you can do this work yourself, depending upon what needs to be done it may cost more than the rifle is worth. I think you should scold him for buying it.

Is there a gun buyback program which will still pay for a rifle with a missing bolt?

He just turned 21 and paid $80. No tax in Oregon. He bought it for us to fix up as a father son project and has fond memories of shooting my Big 5 K98 in our back yard in Southern California.

He called excited after he walked out with it stating the bore was perfect. He just wants to get it running

Just be careful. I say this because I myself do not have the necessary skills and would probably send it to a gunsmith for technical inspection. Good luck, and stay safe.

Never been to Oregon, but that's on my list of possibilities when I retire. Another is northern Virginia, although it seems to be an enclave of anti-gun sentiment. My brother lives in Old Town Alexandria and he says OH YES it isn't like the rest of the south.

His heart was in the right place picking up a father son project. I'm going to give him my K98 early. The gun buy back idea is a good idea, but I'd like to check the rifle out myself first.

If one of my boys came to me with a father/son project the absolute last thing I would do is tell him he screwed up. Some things transcend economics. I would get some cerrosafe and do a chamber cast to confirm the chambering, locate and obtain the appropriate Go- NoGo gauges, and then look for a bolt that will headspace. Just my 2 cents.

By the way, if it is a 7.62x51 chambering be cautious on the loads you use.

I didn't have any 7.62x51 Cetme ammo - only fired 7.62x51 NATO thru mine - and it was unpleasant. Hurt my shoulder like hell, but perhaps I am a big p**sy.

                Have fun.

                  ^^^THAT^^^

A couple of decades ago when Spain flooded the market with their old mil-surps. Integrity challenged unscrupulous importers intentionally mis represented Spanish 1916, 7.62 CETME's as 308s.

Please do not shoot commercial .308 in a Spanish 1916. They were originally M1893 Mausers, chambered in 7x57. It was a stop gap re-chambering by the Spanish Government armory. aka "CETME". Which also, were only used with "7.62 CETME" issued ammo. Which used a light "plastic cored" 125 gr bullet at a greatly reduced pressure.

They were never used or intended for use by the Spanish Army. They were used as training rifles, and also issued to police forces.

If you get it going and are a reloader. I would suggest loading .308 cases. Using >300 Savage data<. If not stick with the "LOW RECOIL" factory ammo available. Which is closest to the original CETME loading.

Even though the sales tag reads".308", and there's no caliber markings, I know it's NATO.

I'm not just going to send him parts either.

Actually it's not "NATO". These 1893 to 1916 rechamber CETME conversions were done in the 1950s. Spain didn't become a NATO member until the 1980s.

If in good condition they are perfectly serviceable rifles.

                      Just not as advertised.

If the bore is perfect, then $80 is cheap. Good deal!

This is a new listing. On E-barf. And considering the already turned down handle. That would BTW be necessary to utilize the scope bases on OP's son's rifle. That is a very good price.

OH CRAP...........ANOTHER SENIOR MOMENT BRAIN FART..................I forgot to post the link. It was a nicely modified 1916 bolt with turned down handle for scope clearance with all internals and nicely polished for BIN of $105 including shipping. NOW GONE.

                            Rifle....Bolt
                            $80 + $105 = $185 for complete Mauser. + scope of course.

                            As GBA said "Good Deal".

7.62NATO is fine to fire in it. Just get some gauges to insure headspace is good. Bolts are plentiful. $80 isn't a bad price and whatever it costs is worth it, for the value is in the time spent together on a father son project.
