    CMP 1911 Flipping Has Begun

Nice, (allegedly) correct but re-parked Ithaca CMP 1911 on Gunbroker with a starting bid of $1600 and a BIN for $2100. I think the Calguns rules prohibit linking to an active auction but if you search "CMP 1911" on GB it comes right up for you.

Note that I am not condemning this person as I do not recall any prohibition on selling in the 1911 lottery paperwork. Curious if he will get his price. No bids yet.

One can only guess how much these will sell for on the CMP auctions once they start. Prices there are INSANE.

This is good news. Opens more 1911A1's to the market which will give more people an opportunity to own a piece of American history.

If people start "flipping" them the prices will go down overall

I have a general question. What do y'all think the pending number of CMP "flipped" 1911's on the market will do to the value of original non-CMP 1911's? I have an original Remington Rand and, while I have no intention of selling it, I have wondered about the CMP's on the market deminishing the value. Curious to see if people start getting their asking prices or not. I think that may determine effect. Thoughts?

I think that people who buy from the CMP for the sole purpose flipping their purchases really piss me off. I have a guy in my city who would go to the CMP south store pretty frequently and then post on the CMP forum about his score. A lot of times it was a field grade or track grade M1. I would see him post it on Outdoor Trader a few days later for double what he paid for it and it would sell. He said this pretty frequently and I lost all respect for him. I guess a lot of people do not realize how simple it is to purchase a rifle from the CMP so they just want to skip the application process or they want to buy a rifle off the books (we can do FTF sales in GA without having to go through a FFL).

I posted a thread on the CMP forum about how I thought the practice of flipping CMP firearms was wrong and I got attacked for my post with many saying 'it's my rifle and I can do whatever I want with it' and ended up having to delete the post due to the feedback. I wish the CMP would go back to a set number of lifetime purchases so that they could limit people from doing this.

If the rules were set back a few years, where one actually had to QUALIFY in competition to get anything, most of this stuff would stop. When the DCM was de-funded, the CMP as a private corporation was born. As such, they need the sales to stay viable.

I remember when Orest was still the director of the CMP and he decided to open it up to 12 M1 Garands a year. It was right around the time that Obama was first elected. He stated in his CMP subforum "Ask Orest" his reasoning was that a bunch of rifles sitting in a warehouse didn't do anyone any good. It didn't help keep the lights on and it didn't further the shooting sports that is the main mission of the CMP. Also, he expressed concern that possible future legislation could end the CMP entirely or at least prevent them from selling surplus rifles. He fet it was better to get the M1's out into private hands and use the money to help promote marksmanship. I think that made a lot of sense.

That pistol he's got for sale; does that look like a 1911 slide on an A1 frame?
                  The ejection port looks high.

Well now we know what these CMP 1911's might fetch in the private market. To my surprise this sold for $1825 - almost 2x what he paid to CMP1911 though he says is is "all correct." I am not enough of an expert to assess this one but it looked heavily re-parked to me. Here is the completed listing:

Posted today on CMP 1911 forum

IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION THAT SOME CUSTOMERS ARE RECEIVING THEIR 1911 AND POSTING ON GUN BROKER AND OTHER SUCH SITES FOR RESALE. THIS WAS NOT THE INTENTION OF THE PROGRAM. IF YOU ARE FOUND TO BE RESELLING THESE PISTOLS YOU WILL BE BANNED FROM PURCHASING FROM THE CMP FOR AN INDEFINITE PERIOD.

Why does the CMP even exist. I always see their tagged guns at gun stores for a hefty premium. What a F'ing joke. Of course, good luck joining a gun club in most areas of CA if you aren't retired.
