HERE'S SOMETHING YOU DON'T ALWAYS SEE!

This was one of the first "fruits" of my '03 C&R : A Remington Model 8 in .35 Remington. I believe it is circa 1917. This rifle was the first successful semi-auto rifle made in the good old USA (FACT). It also has a John Browning long-recoil system (the barrel recoils inside an outer sleeve along with the bolt.......kinda' like Ronnie Barrett did with his semi-auto .50's well over half a century later). It also employs a safety lever not unlike Mikky Kalashnikov's semi-auto did a few decades later. This thing spits out a 200grain FMJ slug @ 2223 fps. & is capable of doing it with handloads @ just under 2980 fps.!!!! I never thought I'd be lucky enough to own one.

After my first range trip with it, I do believe it is a wild boar hunter's dream!!!!!

How much did you pay for it? I might know a guy who is selling one, now I'm thinking about whether it would be worth it to pick it up.

Very nice! I had a Remington 81 in .300 Savage for a few months recently. It was very accurate but man did it kick! With my bad shoulder it was too much gun for me.

Actually, because of the recoiling BBL, it ain't that bad at all. Think AK-47...............on steroids.

Love that action where the barrel recoils in. Great find.

Thanks, guys. You know what? This (TECHNICALLY) would be considered the "Grandfather" of the modern "assault rifle."

Thank your neighbor and fellow gun owners for passing Prop 63. For that gun control is a winning legislative agenda.

I have Model 81s in .35 and .300 savage. They are great gus. The recoil on them is stouter than you would expect from such a heavy gun in a lighter cartridge. It is an artifact of the recoil action. I know, as I have other guns in both calibers, and the recoil in both is significantly less. They are fun guns though. And accurate for an old autoloader. It would be hard to come up with a better hog hunting brush gun. I paied $300 for one and $255 for the other. The Model 81s are less expensive than the older model 8s are. Hit gunbroker, and you can sometimes find a good deal.

They were popular with law enforcement up until the early 50s. A company made an aftermarket 15 rd magazine for sale only to law enforcement. Frank Hamer, the Texas Ranger who led the group that did in Bonnie and Clyde carried a Model 8 in .35 Reminton with an extended magazine.
