For just a shooter, a Chinese Type 53 might be a good alternative to a M44. They don't have the same collector value & typically the wood looks pretty rough, but usually the metal is in pretty good shape, the trigger is great, and it's a fraction of the cost. Of my Mosins, the only ones I'm keeping are the T53 & the Finnish M39.

And for comparison, this is the bore of my Yugo Mauser. After a few fouling shots, it shoots decent.

I've been using ammonia and cleans quicker than just hot water. According to multiple sites, ammonia cleans off salt pretty good. Here's just 1 example: https://www.ontimesupplies.com/offic...due-on-floors/

One of the best ways to clean a barrel like to fire 20 rounds as fast as you can and then clean it there and then. Its remarkable what lead at 2000 FPS and a lot of heat will get out of a barrel

You know what the main ingredient in ammonia based cleaners like winded are? Water.

You know what cleans up salt?

            Water.

            You know what dissolves salt?

            Water.

            Ammonia doesn’t clean salt.

I seriously doubt you’re using straight ammonia to clean your rifles. I pour hot water down my barrel. Use a few patches to scrub it. Clean as normal. Never had rust.

The serial # is on the barrel not the receiver like most rifles so it would be difficult to keep the DROS paper work in order with a barrel change. It would be a waste of money anyway. I had a MN with a real bad bore and it shot just as good as some of the MN i had with nice bores.
              Shoot it and have fun.
