1876 Colt SAA

I have a chance at acquiring a Colt Peacemaker made in 1876 from a friend here in California. Since this gun is black powder and manufactured before 1898 do I have to do this transfer through a dealer? I just can't keep up with the ever changing laws in this state.

It doesnt matter if its black powder. Any firearm mfg prior to 1898 is antique. The plackpowder vs moder ammo thing is a NFA defenition and would not apply to this gun. No trasnfer needed. Check the SN at https://www.colt.com/serial-lookup

Looked the serial number up on the Colt web site. There were many guns given this serial number (22608), but there is one listing in 1876 for a Single Action Army with no other info.

1876 is a very early variant -

I have an 1884 SAA - also required no transfer.

As echoed above, having the Colt letter and provenance on the buyer is fun.

I don't know how experienced you are, but don't be put off by the loading gate number not matching on a BP frame, they seldom did.

Though some gun stores give you the whole metallic center-fire cartridge spiel - they refuse to sell without a transfer.
Had this experience at two LGS in So-Cal.

I don't have an opinion on this - and it's their store so their rules I guess.
