    Paratrooper Model M-1 Carbine

I was talking to a friend the other day and he said that his brother has a paratrooper carbine that has been in his closet for years. I told him that this had retroactively been classified as an "assault weapon".

He was a little shocked to say the least but he was also wondering what he should have done, if he wanted to leave it in it's current configuration. I honestly didn't know the answer.

Was he supposed to register it before Dec 31st 2000?

    Because that's what I told him but I said I wasn't sure...

I told him that the only thing to do was change the stock of for a wood one. Is that the correct answer?

I just wanted to make sure I didn't mislead the man...

Put a conventional stock on it and save the folding stock. (I'm assuming this is semi-auto).

That's what I would do, it's not banned by name.

If its a for real Para those stock are very collectable, make sure he don't lose it. An original Inland carbine w/ an M1A1 stock are very rare.

For now, just remove it from the stock until a replacement stock is located. If it's not in a folding stock, it's not an AW.

another method is pinning a 10 round magazine into the magwell, this can be done easily if you have a spare mag release

drill a hole into the mag release, tap for any machine screw, install onto the gun.

Put a mag into the gun and tighten the screw. It'll stop the magwell from being usable.

After that, you need a long flash hider or something, and the OAL should be met pretty easily... unless you don't mind pinning the folding stock

True. As an aside, on the M1 paratrooper the main problem is the pistol grip and the "no detach mag" requirement it puts in place. Even if the wire stock were fixed open the PG's still there. I have an early Inland in the conventional stock, have a folder repro. It's amazing how light & easy to carry the para model is (out of state of course). Too bad the C & Rs are included in the AW ban, I read they almost got exempt during the legislative process.

well it's very obvious that a collectors rifle would be the prime choice for those looking to hold up a 7-11

I think the main thing that he's miffed about was the fact that there was no notification that it needed to be registered.

I'm wondering what a cop would say if he got pulled over with that. It's been in his family for years...

Well, I guess for him to be notified Uncle Sam would have had to have known that he owned it, I am sure he wouldn't like that either.

No matter how many and how stupid the laws of the land are, its our responsibility to know and understand them. Saying that you didn't know something was against the law is never going to get you off the hook.

I think he might unfortunately say "turn around and place your hands behind your back for me please".

Best thing to do is separate the two parts - it takes about 30 seconds. Find a nice (conventional) original Inland stock and use it that way in CA. If the folder is a repro you can hang on to it and use it out of state. If it's original you can hang on to it and use it out of state or sell it for a good deal of $$$. I don't think $1K is out of line for an original Inland folder stock alone. Maybe someone else has a better dollar amount, I just recall seeing a beat up one at the last Reno show & am pretty sure it had 4 digits.
