    Springfield

Been trying to learn about my "new" Springfield. Lock is marked 1863 which it should be. Breech is marked 1869. It is of course in 50-70. Has a very nice shiny bore with great rifling.

I know later 45-70 versions alot better. I assume this was made in 1869? serial number range is in the 17,XXX area.

I will post a few pics. It will not even be here till Saturday. Or supposed to be anyway. If the Post Office does their part. They usually do not anymore,LOL

It has Cartouche marks so if anyone know anything about those that would be great. Just anything you want to share about it. And I will shoot it so any input there appreciated also..

Looks to be a pretty nice one. Pretty excited to see it, and get some ammunition coming.

    Thanks

Yes it was made in 1869, more than likely reusing a surplus lock.

I have an older 50/70. made in 1864, converted in 1866. I have the Allen conversion, which is considered a weaker action than yours. Yours has a separate receiver and barrel, where as mine had the top half of the barrel cut off, a hinged block installed and the barrel drilled out and sleeved to 50cal

50-70 is a fun caliber to shoot. I've safely fired about 200 rounds through mine. Here is the thread I made when I first got mine. https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/....php?t=1050921

Starline makes good brass for it, RCBS makes the dies, and Lee has a 415 grain RNFP and a 500 grain FP bullet mold, both are .515 diameter.

The shells with either bullet do not hold anywhere near to 70 grains of powder. I seat my rounds pretty deep and can only get about 55 grains with the 415 grain bullet. I keep my loads to about 50 grains for both bullets though and use a small amount of carded wool between the powder and bullet.

Thanks, alot of useful info you supplied there. I appreciate. I may not cast my own bullets. But I do like Starline Brass for other stuff I reload in.

I thought someone told me that it should have four Cartuoches on the stock. 2 from when it was made originally and 2 more new ones when converted to its current state? Not sure if I count four in the pics. But will find that out for sure when it gets here.

On a side note, can CA residents still receive true pre 1899 antiques direct in the mail from a individual? Or do they have to go through a FFL now too. Been gone from there almost 30 years now.

May be listing a antique here in the for sale section soon if it can..

Thanks, yours looks pretty decent. I think the one you have is rarer than my 1869 anyway.

I used to have a 1884 in 45-70 of course. I think I am going to like the 50-70 Caliber better though. About the same price to reload either caliber anyway I think.
