    Green Mosin.

    Explanation:
A buddy of mine from another forum posted some pics of the AK variants with green wood furniture. He was going to try and replicate the color and finish.

I had a Mosin stock I molested previously, and wanted to try out dyeing it green as well.

Here is what I ended up with.

Good color depth, did you wood bleach first or any other special procedures?

The very first time I cleaned this stock I spent a long time using Krud Kutter to get as much cosmoline and oil out of the stock as possible. Did it slowly, over steam, so heat was involved.

This time I only partially removed some oil that came to the surface after I stripped the finish.
I use calcium carbonate mixed with acetone. It is a lengthy process. You slather it onto bare wood, acetone penetrates down and dissolves oil and as the calcium carbonate dries it absorbes the oil, pulling it out of the stock. Then more oil comes to the surface and you essentially have to repeat the process over and over.

A much better way would be to boil the stock in water with degreasing/cleaning agents safe for wood.

I didnt spend enough time pulling oil out but got enough out obviously to have good color penetration with dye powder mixed with isopropyl alcohol.

                Nice job.
                Sorry, not sorry.

Thank you. The only other green mosins I have seen didnt really look as green.

I saw it as a challenge. Could I get it to show grain well and have a nice sharp green color. So in that sense I am happy with the result.

                          Thank you all.

Here is removing oil from really badly soaked areas. Since this was a test, I didn't go nearly as far as I should have if I was trying to produce the best result possible.
That "Whiting" is essentially Calcium Carbonate which can be had cheaper elsewhere. Mix with acetone to cake batter consistency and apply to oil soaked areas. Work small sections at a time. I only applied it that one time and then just decided to try dyeing as is after washing and brushing the chalk off with warm water.

After the stock dried and before applying dye... You can clearly see oil still coming to the surface on the wrist. I didn't bother removing it.

                          Here is first dye application

                          Here is second

And after third. The 2nd pic doesn't show the grain because of the lighting conditions and the surface is matte.

After third application of TruOil (the only clear-ish finish I had on hand)
