    Update on registering C&R, SBR's

I'm about ready to take possession of a Winchester, 1894 (made 1923), 30WCF, short barreled rifle (Trapper).
Can anyone advise the process of having this rifle cleared via ATF and classified as a non-NFA firearm?
I understand the process has changed over the last several months. Can anyone advise a phone number to call in West Virginia (the ATF, NFA division)?

Oh gee I don't know perhaps the parent to this "For sale" forum??? Been here since 2013 and can't discern between the discussion forum and the "Collector's Exchange" sub forum...

Did you check to see if it was declassified by ATF as a C&R? I do not think it would matter as Ca has it own rules.

Yes - as Zinfull states -
In the brown covered C&R reference book that comes with your 03 FFL - there is a listing for the Winchester Trapper rifles that are no longer NFA billed as Short Barrelled rifles because of their historical importance, they are listed by serial number and date of manufacture.

There are several categories of Trapper - https://www.atf.gov/file/84401/download

I imagine the serial numbers and dates are on line somewhere - I would print the page out and keep it with the rifle, BTW.

Its is an interesting list - gold plated UZI carbines with certain serial numbers are on the list, too, quite a few things that you wouldn't expect to be there, are -

what is the barrel length of the carbine? If it is 16" or longer it doesn't need ATF Clearance. 15" and shorter does.....

As you explore the C&R list, don't forget to check the updates link on the same page. There are always Winchester and Marlin Trapper s/n's added with each update.

If your serial number is not on the list the procedure is outlined for submitting the rifle for evaluation.

California Penal Code 12020(b)(7) would be a good starting point. I have not checked the status of that exemption to see if it is still current, if any other prohibitions apply, etc.

Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

                          Regisatering Short Barreled Rifles..Question

Has anyone been able to SUCESSFULLY register an 1894 Winchester, "Trapper", SBR and if so how did you accomplish that? I'm talking Curio or Relic here, not the modern day, 16", .357 version.

Register it as what? As long as it is already registered in the NFA as a C&R SBR, it's exempt from any special CA firearms laws and is just "registered" in AFS as a rifle when it is transferred.

OK...It was recently acquired IN CALIF and I want to register the rifle as a C&R.
Again, has anyone been able to do that?
