I have no idea on value but am interested in seeing pics if you can post them. Others with more knowledge on the subject will likely need to see pics to give a fair estimate.

$500 is way too much, I wouldn't pay near that and I somewhat collect WWII groupings

To give you an idea of value:

You can get an WW2 Ike jacket for as little as $30 to $40
Shirt and trousers are cheap, they can go for as little as $10

Go to ebay and do a quick search, you'll get an idea

Everything else is also fairly cheap, sewing kit, letters, newspapers, etc, are a few dollars

            The most interesting things are:

diary - what did he write? Could be extremely interesting, most are pretty boring
3-page letter account of the battle of Attu - Did he fight? Read the letter first
Large grouping of negatives - What are the photos?
Footlocker with his name and units/regiments painted on top - These can be very cool

Also ask yourself the question, what will you do with it if you buy it? Be honest with the answer. I bought cool stuff like this in the past only for it to sit in the closet for years. If you buy it, are you going to look at it, then stick it in your closet/storage for the next decade? Nothing wrong with that btw, but something to think about

I'm particularly interested in the diary, letters and negatives. Everything else looks good too.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as far as what I'm most interested in.
He's going to send me a screen shot of the battle testimony in the diary. I also asked him what exactly are the negatives of.

You're probably right about what I'd do with it. Most of my stuff gets put away for lengthy periods of time but I'll get stuff out every now and then. The hand written accounts from the soldiers really interests me though.

I'll get some more info and post it later.

                Thanks for the info!

In a material sense no it is not worth it - not even close, go sniff around on Ebay and Craigslist for forty minutes...

...However, if you are drawn to it, and it will make you happy to own in your collection, then the price is less important.

I think it is pretty neat that it is all together. Yes, you will be able to find everything on Ebay, but not together the way that this is. It is up to you, but as a WWII Collector and Reenactor, this stuff can't really be priced. Just my .)2 cents..

                      ^ that's a good summation there.

OP, is the 11th airborne of particular interest to you? (perhaps you had a relative in that regiment, etc.) Things like that can make a grouping more interesting to one individual than another, and also worth paying more from your perspective.

No. I did have family that served in WW2 but not in the 11th Airborne.
I bought another item from this gentleman and he offered the grouping at that time.

I know nothing about this kind of thing hence the thread.

Unless the negatives and the diary are extraordinary I think I'm going to pass on it, at least at that price.

I really appreciate the replies guys, thanks.

If it were me, I'd offer them $100.00. Then I would hold them for a year before offering to donate them to the Patton Museum, Have their appraiser set a value based on Historical significance, then take that value as a Charitable Write off.

Here are more pics. Pretty interesting.

I think jimja was right about the diary though, mostly about his movement from the time he joined the National Gaurd.

There is letter about the battle of Attu but it's hard to read his writing in an email.

Cool stuff, but no 500 worth of cool. Patches are quite common and the rest just doesn't add up to that amount of money.
