Yes, pre 1899 is correct. So, it must have been manufactured in 1898 or prior. The OP said 119 years old so, if he is correct, it was manufactured in 1899 and is not an antique arm.

On the Lebel, most were made before 1899 but few of them were built after 1899 so you need to go by the number and the production dates
Some of them(many) were rebuilt and when the barrel was replaced it carries the date of the repair, so you have to return to the serial number for the original date of manufacture.

Some stores too especially a place like Turner's are going to make you DROS it anyhow. They don't understand stuff like that and/or are paranoid.

If deal is good enough I do it. If not I won't bother with the extra expenses and waste of time. I only have one Lebel currently have had others and has been a mix of having to DROS and cash and carry.

I enjoy finding deals on them from clueless sellers parroting nonsense about French cowardice and junk French guns.

My current one is a Afghanistan bringback with the paperwork that I intend to hold on to.

129 years old, manufactured in 1889, I forgot what year it was now... Damn I feel old.

If the cracks are tight, seep some cascophen in them and clamp it if you're worried.
