Input Requested: M1 Garand in .308

I was thinking about getting a M1 Garand in .308 version (I already have one in 30.06). Anyone have one and how do you like it?

FYI - I just checked CMP and it looks like the are sold. out

Not knocking M1s in 308, but why not just get an M1A? Very similar feel but with a 20 rd mag?

      Was thinking about that too

FYI - Can't have mag's over 10 rounds, so the 20 rounder is def out (at least in this freakin' state!)

10 round mags exist for the M14 pattern, or just get some blocked 10/20 mags.

Since you already have a Garand I'd go with the M1A. They're great and although they're basically an upgraded Garand they still have a distinct feel to them.

I got a Navy Garand barreled action from the CMP. After getting it together, my youngest son fired it and promptly claimed it for his own. It kicks less than the 30/06 Garand.
The only real advantage, if one can call it that, of the 10 rd. .308 M1A has over the 8 rd. .308 Garand is the ability of the M1A to be scoped easier than the Garand.

The 24" barrel on the M1 is going to give you a 2" more sight radius over the 22" M1A. For iron sights every bit helps.
Many of the 308 Garands are up graded with features like a lugged receiver, bedded barrel, 1/2 min hooded rear sight to improve accuracy. OK to shoot them in a "service rifle" match but not for a limited JC Garand match.

I have two in 308 , they are a my favorite Garands
One is a rifle I built off a Navy CMP barreled receiver.
Another I built on unissued 7.62 Navy barrel

I installed the NOS barrel on a real nice SA 5.4 receiver ,all I had to do was lap the bolt to get it to headspace.
Did some work to trigger group , has a nice 5lb pull.
Excellent condition USGI NM front and rear sights and trigger group. Balance of the rest of parts are NOS unissued.
NOS Op Rod, NM gas cylinder, 65 series SA bolt, gas screw , lock and internals.
Did some NM mod work to the rear handguard but that's where I decided to leave the rest to the experts. Sent the rifle off to Ted Brown for a bedding job and NM work to front handguard. He remove the liner, glue and screwed lower band to front handguard

I like my .308 M1. It was rebarelled with a Wilson barrel by Dean's Gun Restoration some years ago. Great shooter.

A M1 in 7.62X51/.308 Win. is a joy to shoot. Don't get me wrong a M1 30-06 is great but my preference is a .308 Win. I have one and a LRB M14SA and still my favorite is the M1. HTH

If you ask me I'd go with the original 30-06. FWIW, at our silhouette match I've shot a high of 32 and 33 on my 30-06 but I've shot a 35 on a 308. Now is the 308 more accurate than the 30-06 on a Garand? Maybe and maybe the same.

Be a purist and go with the 06.

If you have other .308 caliber rifles and ammo?

                            Sure, why not.

                            But if you don't?

Put it toward .30-06 ball Ammo or reloading supplies/equipment.

That rifle you already have only has an accurate useful round-count life of about 12,000 or so.

LOL! Very funny. I'm with you that Garand should not be missed with.
