Cigarette rifle was my first thought too, but too many things seem to contradict that. Receiver ring stippling, and being completely wiped of any markings says Cigarette rifle.
Octagon barrel w/express rib in 7x57, the work on the bolt handle, and fine engraving on stock screws and sling mounts, says pre-war Guild gun. A Guild rifle would have had the different makers marks all over it, especially the barrel. The dbl set trigger looks to be a pre-WWII DWM trigger assembly with the long spring.
The raised flat on the side of the stock just behind the bolt handle, is the remains of an oblong panel that would have extended forward to the receiver ring. It would have been full length with an engraved muzzle cap too. Looks to be cut off right about duffle bag length.
My best guess, is this rifle has 3 history's. A WWI Infantry rifle, a post WWI Guild Rifle, and then a post WWII re-finish/rework into a Cigarette rifle.
Thanatos, especially coming from your grandfather, it would be well worth it to have the stock repaired, and restore that rifle. JMO
