    Small Scale Hughes Cannon

Some of you may have remember my full size Hughes thread covering my full scale I built.

Anyway I have always wanted to build a 1/3 scale of it. Well here it is. It is rifled just like Papa. And a near exact copy. Have a couple small things to finish up yet. Then I will post a test fire for you. Thanks

Thanks Lookout, appreciate that. Another forum wanted to see some eye level pics, so just as well put em here also. Sorry for the life of me, I cannot get pics live without a link from Imugur.

Finally got a short video of the small Hughes Firing. Watching in slow motion too is kinda cool.

Very nice! You’re obviously very skilled. I didn’t realize how small it was until I watched the video and saw your hand.

Yeah, if you did not have a scale reference. You would think it was my full size I built about three years back.

            Thanks for the kind comments.

You are a wood and metal artist! I like the miniatures more than the full size!

Looks great! I love cannon really would like to own one of a scale and power suitable for mounting on the deck of a cruising sailboat for defense against piracy at sea. Thats the dream anyway.

Where would I start to get into cannons?

The best resource as far as supplies, links to vendors who sell safe barrels and knowledge and such is the Graybeard Outdoors Cannon Forum.
                    .

Though I build all my stuff. Because the obsolete stuff I really like such as the Hughes is not available in any kind of reproduction. Has to be built or you will not own it.

Spent 9 months building my full scale Hughes. About 75 to 100 Hrs on the small one atleast.

Check out the Graybeard Forum. If you are serious about a Cannon. You will not find a better place to learn.

Some buy a nice little Barrel from Brooks or such. And build just the carriage. . Not overly priced barrels and some of the most beautiful you can get. For the most part avoid anything on Ebay.

I like Breechloaders. Much easier to not only operate, but easier to clean also.

Hughes was a rare Civil War Confederate Breechloader. DW Hughes was the inventor. We really do not know what they called it originally. Probably a pounder designation like 2 Pounder. Just call it that as he was the designer. Rarity of them is what attracted to me to building them. Only one original in Existence today. That one is what my full and scale ones are copied from.

Alot of time, work and research goes into these. But well worth the effort in the end. But you have to want one to see it through..

Not trying to scare you away. Very fun hobby to have, But this stuff is pretty serious, must be made well within known guidelines. Improperly built and handled and loaded. They can kill and mame. Some get the feeling small ones are toys. Not so. You do not want to build a pipe bomb with supplies from the Hardware store. Some money, but more importantly, research what you are building and purchasing.

Around 12 original Hughes Cannons were made.
