I tried rolling a few cartridges for my '61 Springfield replica. This is my first attempt.
- Had some 5/8 dowel; cut a 9" piece and tapered the end
- Took some scrap 1x and cut out the pattern block
- Had a couple small piece of scrap and string for choke cord
- Have an old stack of tractor feed printer paper
- Got some Minie ball from Track of the Wolf
- Used Pyrodex RS
The process seemed simple enough. I made 10 tubes. Then placed the Minnie ball all the way inside 5 of the tubes using the dowel to push them in. Next, used the dowel to slide another tube in the first, till it seated against the base of the Minnie ball. Added 60gr of powder, and then folded the end.
I found conflicting info on the size to make the pattern block for tracing. I settled on 4" wide, 4.12 tall on one side, 2.5" tall on second side. The paper seemed to thick; many sites recommended paper that would be used to wrap a box for shipping. The 5/8 dowel is big; would like to get a couple pieces turned down to 0.580.
One other problem I found; all I had was Crisco or Thompson Center Maxi-Lube for Maxi ball(used Crisco for these 5). I'll try and find some bees wax...
I followed the second half of this video
I'm just rolling these to use at the range.
Interested to hear how others roll their own, what paper to use, bees wax/lard proportions etc.
