How do you know it was unissued?

It's in really good condition with some storage mark scuffs. There seems to be signs of storage grease on it as well.

Seems curious that it would have left Japanese custody with an intact mum unless it were issued and captured. Any unissued rifles would have been surrendered and had their mums ground.

That is a fair point. The unissued part is probably seller exaggeration, but I'm just stoked on a matching, mum "Last Ditch". I know that an earlier Type 99 with all the bells and whistles are the ones that get attention from beginning collector. Nonetheless, does $400-$500 seem like a good price range?

What series is it? Prices vary based on the "last ditcheness" of the rifle. The very late "rope hole" sling types are way more valuable than others.

Seems over priced, also what stage of last ditch?

Like the others, need to know maker, series, and degree of “last ditch”.

FWIW I bought an excellent condition matching Jinsen series 40 last ditch for $200 sans mum, and surely wouldn’t pay a $300 premium for a mum even though Jinsen is a rarer make.

$500 for a mummed matching rope hole is a different story

Thank God I actually decided to ask in a forum for once before I pulled the trigger on a purchase. It probably doesn't help it's on GunBroker where most things tend to get overpriced. I asked the seller about the marking for series, and he says it's struck in a weird way that it's hard to tell. I thought as much when I saw the picture. My guess, it's a series 28.

A picture of the serial number area will tell you all you need to know about maker and series.

As for series, the higher number doesn’t necessarily mean later rifle. For example, All Jinsen rifles are series 40. Early 40 series would have all the bells and whistles, late series 40 would be “substitute standard” aka “last ditch” to some.

An overall picture of the rifle would help a bunch. Pictures of various features would also help.

This web site has a lot of useful information on Arisaka markings.

I think the price of nice Arisaka’s has started to rise more than we think. I was following a very nice all matching Type 99 on Gunbroker with the intention of bidding on it but once it went over $650 with some spirited bidding, I knew it was going to go for a lot of money and I gave up.

OP externallyn that is a very sharp rifle, looks like a nagoya mark, late features, might be worth the 500 if all correct and 99% shape.

Search for the completed auctions on gunbroker, prices are varied, some pretty high, none really cheap anymore.
