New to me FN 49 not cycling

The wife bought me a Fn 49 for my birthday. I got to admit it is a pretty sweet shooting single shot rifle. Though, I have heard that it is supposed to be a semi-auto I was hoping I could get some help figuring out how to make it semi-auto.

I am shooting ppu 8mm.It shoots great and cycles relatively easy manually. The brass comes out fine, so i suspect the gas system to be the problem.

    1. I pulled the upper handguard and found that the gas adjustment sleeve was all the way forward completely covering the gas aperture. Of note, the gas sleeve turned easily without the need of a tool. I am not sure if this is normal
    2. I checked piston and springs and did not see any obvious issues or
anything binding in any of the gas system.
    3. Stumped, I resorted to the very un-american step of actually reading the manual. I am not impressed with whoever translated the manual to English but it did lead me to a potential culprit.
    4. According to the manual "Turning 180 degrees the qas cylinder plug , cuts the inlet of the gas. The piston does not transmit any thrust on the bolt carrier. The rifle can then be used like a repeater by pulling the bolt carrier by hand."

Can anyone explain to me what the correct orientation of the plug is? I have not figured out how to even turn it.

The second question is what the heck do they mean by the rifle can be used as a repeater by hand pulling the bolt?

    maybe this will help:

Except if I'm understanding your situation correctly you want to do the opposite of the video, i.e you want to increase the pressure on the gas cylinder (close the port). There's a gap in the top that bleeds pressure off & that's the area you want to close off.

The other option is check for a leak or frozen part somewhere else?

Grenade launcher plug. Turned one way cuts off the gas. So turn it 180*. The "A" should face up.

Exactly right. The plug is turned upside down. No gas going to the piston.

You should read up on the KB potential of the Egyptian FN49. especially if it has a one piece firing pin. IDK if PPU uses hard primers in their 8mm but you should be aware there is a potential for damage and/or injury.

Push the spring loaded pin on the gas plug, turn it and remove it. Muzzle down, shake the spring and gas piston out of the rifle. Clean them and the gas cylinder. Wipe dry - no oil!. Install everything and turn the gas plug so that the hole in the plug lines up with the gas port in the gas block so you can see how it will all end up once installed. Install. Open the gas sleeve until most of the gas port is exposed, load a round into the magazine, chamber, fire. Repeat and close the gas sleeve a couple clicks at a time until the bolt locks open. Load the magazine and fire the rounds. If the rifle doesn't properly cycle, close the gas port another click until it does function and lock open.

              Best of luck.
