    Old shotgun, pierced primers

My second thread of the day involves an old Remington from Grandpa Forster.

By my research it is a Remington Model 10 - 12ga fixed full choke - downward ejecting pump action, built from a JMB patent from 1903.

It appears to have a manufacturing stamp of 192704, I presume April 1927.

Taking this old beauty to the range, I put several shells of 7/8 Oz. 2-3/4 inch 12ga through it, just to check function. I don't think its been shot in the past 50 years or so.

Everything *seemed* fine, a little clunky occasionally lifting shells into the chamber. Ejection was authoritative

Range master picked up one of the ejected shells and said "Woa, looks like you are piercing primers, might want to stop right about now!"

Sure enough, we looked at them and of the 9 or so shells that we put down range, at least 2 had pierced primers. (Attachment to follow)

I measured the firing pin protrusion from the bolt face when I got home. When I pull the barrel & tube off and pull the trigger, firing pin sticks out 0.0900 inches measured with my calipers.

Do you guys know if this can be fixed? I would love to take it out and use it, but not if I'm going to harm the gun, or blow up my face

Took gun apart, balistol'd up the insides and cleaned well.

Bolt is... complicated. There's at least 6 pins holding various inner-workings together, and a striker rather than a hammer.

So if I want to have less protrusion of the firing pin, if that is what's causing the pierced primers, it seems like I'd have to file down the end of the pin. This appears totally doable, but I'm going to wait for some advice first.

Without some kind of instructional video I'm really not keen on trying to disassemble the bolt. This guy has 2 videos on the model 10 I found quite helpful.

But I haven't seen anything on taking the bolt down to parts.

Give these folks a try not sure what else they may have. I did a lot of hunting with a model 10 when I was growing up.

This discussion thread talks about firing pin protrusion (in a Perazzi and others).
Question on firing pin protrusion…. My Perazzi (and a friend of mine – Smiley -) have an issue with pierced primers on the bottom barrel of our Perazzi MX8’s (we both use factory cartridges only). This seems to happen with a particular type of hull used by manufactures here in Australian and...

Mentioned are a Browning technician saying 0.055-0.075 are spec for shotgun firing pins (again mine is 0.090),
And that Fiocci primers are prone to piercing in one gentlemans shotgun but other brands do not.

A simple fix would be to use different shot shells that don't pierce.

          Thanks Tom-ADC!

$12 for a manual seems cheap compared to a visit to the emergency room!

I have a few of their manuals good stuff. They have a good email newsletter I get maybe once a month.

european primers tend to be easier to pierce (fiocchi, creddite, rio). try some remington shells -- they still use brass primer cups which tend to resist piercing.

Just a guess, but maybe someone replaced or made a firing pin and left the protrusion too long. Could simply be wear in either the Bolt itself, the firing pin retainer, or the groove in the firing pin that the retainer pin goes through, may be worn, letting it travel too far.

Only way to know is disassembly I think. Should be pretty straight forward, just pay attention and takes pics if you need to as you go. Good Luck

Sounds like a worn out firing pin return spring.
