Hello all,

I have always been interested in Enfields and was wondering what I need to look for in a Jungle Carbine. Apart from general condition, what particular stamps or markings should I look for? Is there a good way to spot a fake? These days, what price should I expect?

Some things to look for: original rubber butt pad, conical flash hider, bolt handle ball is hollowed out. Year of manufacture ( they didnt start making them until later in the war). The sights have elevation to only 800 yards).

If it says Golden State Arms or Santa Fe it's an aftermarket conversion.

I've got two jungle carbines. Both with matching numbers. I've seen them go generally between $500-700. I've seen $900 on Gun Broker. I also just missed one at Turners for $300.

I have a friend with an Ishapore conversion in 7.62. Fun to shoot but side by side the differences are very obvious. Good luck!

As mentioned, real No5's have several distinguishing features. Things like bolts and sights can be swapped with standard No4 parts, but other features are not so easy to fake.

The receivers have a different contour of the lightening cuts on both sides by the rear sight than those on a regular No4.

The barrels are lightened at the knox form.



Mine is kind of beat, but is an original No5 with a good bore. I believe I paid $300 for it last year when I picked it up.

So, I managed to check out a nice looking piece. Only issue I had was the top of the butt plate. it appears that it was rounded off at the top (no more extended metal where it screws into the stock). The stock was repaired to even out the low spot where the butt plate would be recessed into it. Other than that, the rifle was beautiful.

It is stamped 12/45 No5 MKIROF(F). Also stamped with Crown and BNP? Bore looked great too. The owner is yet to decide if he will sell or what price he wants. Until then, I am still looking for a nice example.

Jungle Carbines are super-cool, only enfield i ever really wanted. I got one, then kinda fell in love with No. 1 Mk.III's. Didn't get one but a No. 1 MkV found it's way to me. Unicorn!
