Probably the rifles name from the GI who carried it. And possible his second rifle. Hence the "II".
      Sorry, not sorry.

Are you sure that II is not a U for underwood? Hard to say when and why someone put a name there. Could be put there by a Soldier, but also could have been there at any time in the last 70 years. No one but the guy that did it will ever know.

I just went to a auction here recently. The guy had a fetish about putting numbers, his initials and such on his Firearms. He was a class act though. He used a engraving pen and put the same "stampings" in the metal. Not the wood. Probably the most valuable one he did this to. Was a Colt Cobra. Scribbled this crap on the barrel. It was a shame. He did this to probably around 20 Firearms. About 20 others escaped his handy work at least.

It has been heavily sanded. The cut out has what is left of a "flaming bomb" ordnance stamp, and to the right of the word is definitely what's left of a "U" for Underwood. Is it a Type I, Type II, or Type III hand-guard (two rivets, or four)? My bet is a Type I - two rivets, deep/wide sighting groove.

The word looks like "Pedersen" to me.

                Here's yours:

I could only see what I thought was a U and the flaming bomb. Could not see well enough to see the Pederson marking.

Though Irwin Pederson actually never produced any Carbines. Their parts, mostly recievers, contract, were taken over by SG division of General Motors. And some Irwin Pederson Receivers deemed acceptable were put together using alot of S'G' parts.

But your Handguard was likely made by Pederson for Underwood. OP is yours a 4 rivet or two?

THAT Pedersen is NOT Irwin-Pedersen of the M1 carbine infamity. It was a different Pedersen who made the wood for Underwood. I read that years ago and don't remember where, or the specifics. I just remember that THAT hg is NOT correct for an IP carbine. I had one on my IP until:1) I found out it was incorrect, and
                            2) I found a proper IR-IP hand guard for it.

It is a two rivet handguard.
