    Winchester M1 Garand on layaway

After sales tax it's going to be $2225 (2000+tax+DROS; it's a consignment so they have to DROS it...? I guess...) Anyway, he said if it doesn't work out he'll give my money back, but I've been wanting one for as long as I can remember. My dad used one when he was serving in British Honduras (now Belize). It's "Service Grade" as far as I can tell (I'm not sure the year, he said he could look it up later for me; I know it's WWII era because it's made by Winchester). Few to no scratches on the finish, the store owner said a WWII vet put it together after collecting all Winchester parts. The stock is walnut reproduction and in perfect condition. The barrel is very good condition (very little wear on crown).

I'm going to keep doing research, but I decided to put it on layaway so I wouldn't lose it if it's a decent find. Any input appreciated. Sorry no pictures, I'll ask next time I go by, but I know most stores don't like pictures being taken.

Seems spendy to me, but like they say, you don't pay too much, only too early.

Winchester Garands aren't very common, but that price seems very steep.

There are people out there that like to part out perfectly functioning M1 Garands and carbines to build so-called "correct" rifles. I don't know why someone would do that just to drop it into a reproduction stock.

But if you like it and find the price agreeable, that is all that matters.

For that price I hope you know how strip it down and identify all of the Winchester parts. If not, I would pass.

Why bother with all the parts only to use a repro stock? Doesn't add up...

          And yes, a bit spendy.

Way too much IMO and that isn't even going to be followed up with a "back in the day you could get one for blah blah blah"

You should be able to find a very nice Winchester $1,000 less than that

Put up a WTB ad over on CMP forum and you'll probably have a few offers to pick from in a couple days

Thanks all, I appreciate the quick responses. Given the feedback, I think I'll back off. I already set myself up with a (legitimate) out, and I'll keep looking. I'm also not super happy about it not being a regular DROS transfer. The Winchester aspect of the rifle is nice, but as much as I want a piece of history, since it's not a period stock, I am more concerned about it being functional (and holding value) than being uncommon.

Good choice. You'd be overpaying by about a Garand(sorry, had to)

Winchester M1 Garand parts are expensive. It's worth at least what the parts are worth.

Thanks everyone for the input. One of the members pmed me about a couple that he has. Went back to the store today. Got $500 back, no pressure, no questions. Very professional.
