I'm with most here and say go with a service grade for your first one and pick up a field grade next. Yes, after getting the first one you will get another. You just won't be able to stop yourself.

Field grades are no longer a sure thing for USGI wood. Lots of chatter over on CMP forums about field grades coming with new Hackberry stocks.

My CMP Garand is a Special Grade with a new Criterion Bbl. in 7.62x51 and came with new CMP wood. Since it is a 1955 Springfield, I don't feel so bad about it being in 7.62x51 and "ruining" a piece of WWII history. Besides, like Garandimal said, "Get the Field grade, shoot the piss out of it, and then re-Bbl. it with a new Criterion Bbl. in either 30-06 or .308. for a coupla hundred dollars."

          Good shooting and best regards,
          870classic.

Thanks for all the advice. Finally made it to the notary and got my paperwork in the mail today. Decided to go with $750 Service Grade and added a note asking for USGI wood if possible. We shall see what happens!

About reporting CMP Garands delivered to your home with 03 FFL and CoE: there are two possibly applicable forms, BOF-961 "Collector In-State Acquisition of Curio or Relic Long Gun Report" and BOF-4100A "Curio or Relic Firearm Report". For those here who have done this, which form did you use?

I'm thinking BOF-961 is appropriate, since BOF-4100A refers to PC 27565, which includes "taking possession outside of this state", and the rifle is being delivered in-state. But BOF-961 is titled "In-State Acquisition", and CMP is out of state. I'm confused.

Only a year?? Sheesh-"short-timer" for sure. I waited 18 months for mine.

I used form BOF-961 since I actually acquired it in state. Don't worry if the DOJ takes a long time to send a confirmation letter back to you, DOJ cashed my check right away but I did not receive a letter from them until almost 6 months later. Enjoy your Garand, I received a really nice 6 digit Garand that dated it Sept 1942. :-) Long shot but my Dad could have carried this Garand.
