How do you all deal with that? I'm sure everyone that posts on this subforum hears the tired old stories about how whatever Luger or P38 was pried from the cold dead hands of a high ranking SS officer. I guess that's more glamorous than saying grandpa won it in a card game in the UK.
I hate to burst anyone's bubble but if asked to evaluate a gun I tell the truth. Guy I know that sells at gun shows was recently shown a Luger where the owner was boasting those type stories. He was asked to appraise it and the vendor I know told him the truth how it could not possibly be what he said it was by the story. I forget exact details but it was wrong year and a commercial gun I believe.
Of course the guy gets upset and refused to believe it. Usually I just ignore such stories but I don't like when people do try to defraud others. I don't buy stories and I want solid provenance if I'm paying more for a gun due to bring back status and I will do the research or use my knowledge.
Currently for sale on the marketplace is an Astra 600 9x19 that the seller is claiming is a WW2 bringback. If you look at serial number range that is impossible plus gun has no provenance or papers. If you read marketplaces rules carefully it says we may post in public if there is something that can cause the gun in question to be shown as fake or misrepresented.
So I did ask for some clarification, seller PM's me upset how I'm trying to make myself feel superior and I'm questioning his honor and integrity and he knows for certain someone in the 101st Airborne brought it back from WW2. Uh OK. I even double checked serial number ranges and that is impossible. Of course he is still bumping sale post and not correcting his mistake or fraud.
Buyer beware as always but always do your research before making an expensive mistake. And I do hate seeing people get taken advantage of like on the infamous 91-30 group buy.
