False vet / bring back stories and guns

How do you all deal with that? I'm sure everyone that posts on this subforum hears the tired old stories about how whatever Luger or P38 was pried from the cold dead hands of a high ranking SS officer. I guess that's more glamorous than saying grandpa won it in a card game in the UK.

I hate to burst anyone's bubble but if asked to evaluate a gun I tell the truth. Guy I know that sells at gun shows was recently shown a Luger where the owner was boasting those type stories. He was asked to appraise it and the vendor I know told him the truth how it could not possibly be what he said it was by the story. I forget exact details but it was wrong year and a commercial gun I believe.

Of course the guy gets upset and refused to believe it. Usually I just ignore such stories but I don't like when people do try to defraud others. I don't buy stories and I want solid provenance if I'm paying more for a gun due to bring back status and I will do the research or use my knowledge.

Currently for sale on the marketplace is an Astra 600 9x19 that the seller is claiming is a WW2 bringback. If you look at serial number range that is impossible plus gun has no provenance or papers. If you read marketplaces rules carefully it says we may post in public if there is something that can cause the gun in question to be shown as fake or misrepresented.

So I did ask for some clarification, seller PM's me upset how I'm trying to make myself feel superior and I'm questioning his honor and integrity and he knows for certain someone in the 101st Airborne brought it back from WW2. Uh OK. I even double checked serial number ranges and that is impossible. Of course he is still bumping sale post and not correcting his mistake or fraud.

Buyer beware as always but always do your research before making an expensive mistake. And I do hate seeing people get taken advantage of like on the infamous 91-30 group buy.

Yes, a grain of salt...But some times the story seems plausible.

An SKS I picked up, from a "friend of the vet's widow", who knew the guy and was just the middle man, said she just wanted it gone, because he brought it back from "over there". It was dirt cheap ($100), so I obliged. It meant nothing to them, means a lot to me. It looks like it's seen combat, versus a supply dump pick out the pile new.

Another is a T38 Arisaka my uncle gave me in '60. My aunt made him get rid of it because it was bad ju-ju (antang-antang in Tagalog). Last march he asked me if I still had it, and that was the first time I was able to ask him where he'd acquired it. When we came ashore on New Guinea he said. He and my pops were in the 1st Filipino Regiment, he was an Alamo Scout (I think), my dad a machine gun NCO. When he had asked me if I still had it, that opened a window for me to inquire. MUM, No papers.

BTW, the Filipino Combatants were awarded the Congressional Gold medal this weekend in the City. The family's very proud. PAX

I like any history about a gun I buy as long as it does not raise the sale price

I also bought a sks from the son of a Vietnam vet, no papers but had the Vietnam look you learn to look for and only wanted $150.

Buy the gun, not the story. I've seen too many people posting on other forums or facebook about acquiring a "bring back" (I mainly look at Mauser stuff, specifically German. I'm not too versed in other firearm systems) only for them to be posting Nazi German K98ks with bad markings, mix masters, and the occasional Mitchell's. I think the logic kinda goes like this: grandpa served in WW2 and grandpa had a German K98k in his closet, so grandpa must have brought it back; or grandpa wanted to embellish his role in WW2 a little more, so he embellished his role in the service to his grand kids. Everyone embellishes stories to some extent, but some more than others.
Honestly, I believe in telling it as it is. It's to inform the owner of what they have and to possibly protect others in the community from possibly bad items. When it comes to German K98ks, there are a lot of bad eggs, so it comes with a steep learning curve.

Don't get me wrong I like to hear the story as long as isn't stolen valor and is at least probable but I won't add any value without provenance.

And for the record not everyone embellishes stories. I for one don't and never will. I can't stand blowhards and stolen valor.

On certain guns you do get a feel for them if they actually do match the story or they have features of course that back it up like no safety on a Tokarev and no import marks.

There's a small gun shop in a local mountain community and I was very friendly with the owner. Then one day I showed him how someone had humped up a consignment Garand he was selling. Its been two years and he stilll won't look me in the eye. Figured out it must have been his Garand.

Why don't you tell me all about that "Vietnam look" you claim to be able to tell? I want to know.

I tune it out unless I am buying and they want extra for the story or they are trying to fleece someone I know. Or if I'm not buying and they ask for honest opinion. I have become adept at ignoring such tall tales, gun shop braggadocio and mall ninja BS but still wears on me once in a while.

I'm with pit- smile and nod. I pay what the gun itself is worth, plus a premium if it comes with bring back papers. I do agree that some stories are so outlandish that I really have to try not to interject.

It seems like every German gun has come from an SS officer, even those RC import marked P38's.
