    .303 British Mark VII

I recently came into a small cash of .303 British Mark VII ammo, and is now looking to procure a rifle to shoot these rounds... Yes a bit backwards but hey, any time there's an excuse to either buy ammo or a firearm, we don't judge.

Anyway, I'm now searching for Enfield rifles and would like some recommendations on where to procure a good example of this rifle either local in So. Cal., or online.

I know next to nothing with regards to Enfield rifles, having only dabbled with Mausers and Mosins in the past. Just based on some superficial research I am currently looking for No. 4 MK IIs to go with the MK VII ammo, but if you think I should broaden my search I welcome any suggestions...

    Thanks!

Very good Indian ammo made at the Kirkee factory. Had some years back and all went bang. It is non magnetic if I remember, but def. corrosive.

      Good website for you...

      And you could get a No1 Mk3, No4 Mk1, No4 Mk2, and the Jungle Carbine for a good collection of .303 throwers.

Good to know! Especially the corrosive part.

          Nice.

I've been eyeballing that Jungle Carbine also... But getting all of them would be a stretch...

Me and my buddy both have a No4 MkI. (Mine's a Savage.) Fun rifle to shoot, best surplus out there is the Greek HXP. It's Boxer primed, non-corrosive. But has gotten hard to find in the last couple years.

Bought every round I could find so I have a reasonable supply of it to feed my rifle for years to come.

I've been keeping an eye out for a No5 for a while but they don't come up often.

The ammo looks like some Pakastan surplus I got. I can't see the year stamp on the case but could be cordite "powder". Has a unique smell when shot.
If you haven't handled an Enfield rifle action yet, they cock the firing pin spring on the load push of the bolt so then almost opens itself when you release the bolt due to the spring pushing it reward.

The No. 1 Mk III is cool. There's a couple different listings of them in the collector exchange above.

I have a No.1 MkIII, and two jungle carbines. They are all a pleasure to shoot. The Jungle carbines do give a decent kick as they are so light and short barreled.

There's at least one Jungle Carbine for sale in OC in the CG marketplace right now. And a MK III in Pasadena.

If it's cordite, it's supposed to cause more rapid throat erosion. If its a small cache of ammo, maybe not such a big deal, but in a collectible rifle I'd shoot something less destructive.

Does smell awesome however and you'll notice range-neighbors inquisitively sniffing the air

I had some South African ball from 1960 that when fired, smelled like a corpse from 10 days ago. As corrosive as anything I've ever seen in my life.

Some Iraqi .303 ball that I shot had the same stink. Really foul smelling.

I personally would try to get a unmolested No1MkIII first, but the answer, of course, is to get all three.

And a P14 and a Martini Enfield too!

Any of the Enfields mentioned above are a good choice. I find that I shoot better with the peep sight on the P14, No4, and No5 rifles than the sights on the No1. YMMV

Look for a No4 Mk1/2 or Mk1/3, these are No4 Mk1 rifles that were rearsenaled post war and brought up to the Mk2 standard. They are usually in good shape and can be found for $400+/-. A No5 is a good rifle but for your first Enfield I recommend a No4 and expand your collection from there.
