US Winchester 1917 Help

I inherited a US Winchester 1917 30-06 rifle that has been converted to a hunting rifle. The serial number dates the rifle July of 1918.

I would like to sell it and am seeking honest feedback of what it's worth given the fact it has been converted and not original.

That's a beautiful 1917 sporter...

"Value" and "worth" are two separate things.

It has massive family value...

However it's not "worth" a bunch of cash.

The scope bases / mounts are old style tip up. They are functional, but very old tech. The stock work looks very nice...

One thing you cannot evaluate is bore condition . A good number of these sporters were "over cleaned", and have worn out rifling near the muzzle.

If it were mine, I would keep it... It's probably not going to bring much more than $300.00

milling off the sight wings kills collector value. I had one of those and i was able to sell it for 350 with no scope. They are nice rifles , I consider ex military sporters in a class of their own. Collecting them is not expensive and rewarding.

I've got an 1918 sport job too, but it can be returned to milspec. $300 from Kansas

An 03A3 Smith Corona that I thought was a Griffin and Howe, it's so well done. Lyman front & rear. Sent pictures to G&H and their archivist was kind enough to point out the subtle differences, but commented what a nice job was done. $200 from the Outdoor Sportsman in Stockton.

Two .303 #4s, one can be saved, the other...not - cut barrel Parker Hale front sight. Both $75 each.

An Arisaka T99 .30-06 Bell and Carlson stock, chromed turned down bolt, Weaver 4X32 scope. $100...it turned into an SKS

All are from the time past, when a talented gunsmith could make a living off such things. I've poste pictures of them all, but the bucket fail ate them.
