The CMP announces that it is preparing to sell GI 1911s and the internets are swamped with posts about how messed up the CMP is. They are sick, bad, unfair, incompetent; their guns are in bad condition, too expensive, a ripoff of honest customers.
Now there are 80,000 M1 Garands coming back from overseas and here comes another tsunami of criticism and online hate.
Can someone please help me understand this irrational spite and hatred?
My point of view is that CNP is chartered by Congress and must follow the rules that govern them. Their legally mandated purpose is to promote youth and adult marksmanship and firearm safety.
Money from their sales goes to run their competitive marksmanship programs and to be set aside in an endowment to pay for future activities after all surplus firearms are sold.
They are not for profit and are required to sell at market value. Their requirements for sales and firearm grading criteria and prices are published for all the world to see, no surprises.
They are world class experts in repairing and tuning the surplus firearms they sell. They get guns in every state of disrepair and wear and return them to excellent condition, and test fire them and make sure they are safe.
You can buy all sorts of crap Garands online and in Gun Shops, but none of them are in such good condition or as accurate as a CMP Garand. You know exactly what you're getting.
I believe that their Prices and Grading System are very fair. Everything is laid out for you to make your informed decisions. They are famous for their excellent customer service.
Now and then they get a little slow when they're getting truckloads of mail, emails and phone calls after some earth shaking event like running out of a particular model of firearm or when new firearms first go on sale. I think this is pretty understandable.
Their sales packet is not that hard to fill out and their requirements are not the House of Torture that some make them out to be. Join the CRPA ferchrissake. Get a signature Notarized. It won't make you bleed.
