    Dump question on Mosin-Nagant rifle.

I never own a Mosin-Nagant so if my question is so #### then forgive me.
Below the barrel I saw "the rod (?)" I wonder what is the technical name for that rod ? What is the function of that rod on the rifle ? That rod remind me of the musket.

Yup that's a cleaning rod. Unscrews counterclockwise and pulls out. Even Big5 gave me the whole kit shown below when I bought an 1891.

FYI, never clean your mosin with that cleaning rod even with the bore guide in the cleaning kit. It really sucks.

Yes, it totally sucks but more importantly the cleaning rod is made of the same hard steel as the barrel. This is why a lot of mosins have worn rifling at the crown.

I thought it was because they did not ever use the cleaning Rods to clean them in Russia. Most mosins I have seen have bad barrels from breach to crown. I have two carbines with nice barrels but both are counter bored. And two 91/30's with crappy barrels that are not CB. So who knows? I don't think conscripts cleaned their rifles at all.

The cleaning rod was the primary reason for the counterbore. Plenty of mosins have nice bores but a counterbore. Vladimir and Ivan talking chit while shoving that rod through the rifle's muzzle without a bore guide. That steel cleaning rod acted like a file.

Mosins with bad barrels throat to muzzle aren't caused by the cleaning rod.

                    So that what it's for!

I always thought it was stir stick for Ruskie malto-meal rations.
