    Just bought this 98k

I've been looking for another Mauser rifle cuz, well, cuz I like them! I enjoy target shooting with them. Anyway, when I saw this one available I couldn't say no. The condition and history convinced me.

    Description:

YUGOSLAVIAN Model 98k Mauser bolt-action rifle # A898 (8mm) mfg. by Nazi arsenals during WWII and refurbished by Zastava in c.1950. Excellent condition, a large-ring standard-length Mauser with 98% or better original bluing on the metal surfaces and a mirror bright and strong bore. Weak Tito-era Yugoslavian crest above chamber, stuck over original Nazi markings byf 44 (Mauser, 1944) which are faintly visible. All-matching Yugo serial numbers, with all milled parts (solid front band). Stock is laminated with some scratches from actual service use, Nazi eagle over H cartouche faintly visible. Includes cleaning-rod and front sight-hood.

    Picture attached.

So for you Mauser experts out there, did I get a good one?

Looks like a nice, Yugo rebuilt 98! I bet it shoots as good as it looks.
    C&R nut.

Empire Arms? Kroh is a great guy to deal with.
Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

I picked one of those up from JG Sales when they had them a couple years ago, used it as a donor for a High Turret Sniper project. It turned out pretty nice.

This was the day I got it:

This is how it looks now:

        Really fun rifle.

        Shoots pretty good too:

Now did you have to drill and tap the receiver to do this? If not, I'd be interested in trying this myself. Also, the name of the scope?

Dennis at Empire Arms is a straight dealer....one of the few reliable ones in the business. You can feel pretty safe buying from him.

I did, it is Accumounts split-ring HT mounts, installed by Vaughn99 from over on Gunboards. The Yugo reworks have their own historical significance to a point, but much less than the rifle did before they reworked it. I had a RC barreled action I was planning on using, but couldn't bring myself to drill that one. I figure the Yugoslavians already Bubba'd it when the reworked and rebarreled it, so it is the lesser of the possible evils, so to speak. I don;t have the money for a real one, and if I did I wouldn't want to shoot it.

For the glass, I tried and returned two reproduction scopes from Sarco, they looked pretty but had a lot of slop in the adjustment. I ended up watching Ebay and picking up a steel body post-war Henzolt Wetzlar.

I know the split rings are not correct, but the advantage of not needing to take apart the scope to install it, as well as the option of using a 1" tube (with spacers) if need be outweigh the fact it isn't a perfect period type mount. There is also no risk of anyone mistaking it for anything other than what it is, a reproduction.

I dropped it in a Norwegian stock I got from Tommy in The Netherlands. I am really happy with how it turned out. The stock it came with is now on the RC Barreled action I originally planned on using.

It is a good shooter too, provided you handload. Prvi, not so much:

Yugo K98 rework AKA Yugo "capture" K98 AKA Yugo 98/48.

I had 2 at one point and let them go to fund more "original" German K98's. However, I do intend to acquire another one when the opportunity presents itself.

Barring any really hard use or neglect, you can expect a nice bore, smooth action, and often nice stocks. Just a generally nice and often lightly used post war rework variant. I wouldn't get worked up over matching vs mismatching because the parts will likely all be scrubbed and renumbered anyway. Remaining unscrubbed waffenamts can often still be found on the parts. Forget about historical authenticity and focus on blasting targets with all that surplus 8mm.

Empire doesn't sell crap, and on the off chance they did, Dennis would say it's a turd. Empire has an excellent reputation, you'll be happy with your new rifle.
