    91/30 Cocking piece

Can someone post a picture of a cocking piece from a 91/30? Specifically the part that holds on to the black post that goes down when you pull the trigger? Is that called the sear?

Mine is unsafe, and I'm getting to be fairly sure that it has been modified before I bought it at big 5.

The picture is of the sear. The cocking piece is the round knob at the back of the bolt (that also can be turned left to put on the safety)

What makes the sear act unsafe? If the bolt holding it in place on the receiver is loose, it could create a hair trigger. Check that first.

It's not the sear. It's the part on the cocking piece that touches the sear that I'm talking about. Somebody seems to have filed the corner off. I'm guessing someone did that so it would have the admittedly very nice trigger it does now. It's not so good, however, when the rifle fires when you disengage the safety.

+1 my safety is hard to pull out, maybe because of gunk. Open bolt is safe enough for me.

Buying a new cocking piece and fixing the problem is very easy. Mark Kubes sells them online pretty cheap. Numrich is another source. Changing out that part won't affect headspace one bit.

The trick to using the Mosin safety is all about technique, not strength. Take the rifle in your right arm with the buttstock against your bicep just above the elbow joint. Left hand obviously helps balance by holding the fore end of the rifle. Grab the cocking piece knob with right hand and pull back/turn left to engage safety. The counterpressure of pulling the rifle against the right arm makes the motion very easy. Try it and you'll be pleasantly surprised. The Mosin safety is one of the safest designs out there to use with a round in the chamber.

I've filed back the part on the cocking piece to bring the corner back. If I get weak primer hits next time I go shooting, I guess I'll have to buy a new one.
