    Spanish mauser 1916 updated

So i was in Arizona last week and decided to stop by J&G for the first time. Looked at the various c and r and picked up a 7mm 1916 Spanish Mauser and a box of 100 surplus cartridiges for about $200 out the door. Whole transaction took about 5 min, since I had already sent in my 03 and my COE (for ammo over the internet) and my ID. It must be miserable to live in a free state where you can buy a gun and be shooting it in less than an hour.
He is a couple of pics after i cleaned it up. Boy was it dirty. I was a little woried about it but now it looks like some of the Mosins i have had over the years

That's a great little gun shop. I stopped in there earlier this year and was impressed with how friendly the staff were. How nice it would be to live in a free state. Congrats on your 1916.

      Congrats!

Looks like you picked up a cool Model 1916!

The rear sight (Lange) were used until approximately 1927 when it was replaced by the conventional tangent sight.

A large majority of these rifles were refinished by the fascist government. Most have scrubbed receivers. Your M1916 (First Type) looks to have missed the arsenal refinishing.

      Nice find, enjoy!

I picked one of those up from JG last year, it was the filthiest rifle I have ever seen, but cleaned up pretty well. Lots of details and pics in this old thread:

I have the same rifle 1926 made 7mm with Lange vezier sight. Mine was dirty and the barrel was worn out. Also had green paint on the stock. Not sure what that was for. I ended up replacing the barrel and now it has a new lease on life.
Does anyone know where did these rifles serve after the end of Spanish civil war in 1939?

Mine was bad but not as bad as yours. I cleaned up the stock with some garand gear gunny paste and sprayed the crap out of it with hoppes gun medic. I hole it shoots. I should find out tomorrow

Congrats on the pickup. It's a wonderful feeling to be done with a transaction in a few minutes isn't it?

So i went out and tried to shoot my little spaniard and had no success with the surplus ammo. 10rounds 10 clicks. The primers are dimpled but no bang. I need to get some known ammo to see if its a rifle issue or an ammo issue.

If it's the surplus 7mm J&G has it's probably the ammo

                    Hard military primers?

I have the same issue. 10 rounds or so and only one bang. Hard military primers? Got to get modern commercial ammo to test.

Did it go bang if you gave it another pin strike?

Did you thoroughly clean the crap out of the bolt interior? By thoroughly clean. I mean disassemble and dump into a pan of boiling water for 15 minutes. Then scrub and re-oil everything before reassembly.

80 yr old cosmo really slows down the pin strike.

                        just ask'n

                          Multiple strikes on same round-nothing.
I fully broke down the bolt and cleaned it with hoppes gun cleaner. I wish there was cosmo on this thing. Nothing but dirt.
Im leaning toward crap ammo from j and g. Comments on site are similar to my experience.

I disassembled the bolts, cleaned and oiled them.

What I got was dimpled primers and one bang. I tried several cartridges several times, always pointing the muzzle down range and waiting 30 seconds to avoid a hang fire.

By the way, I have three 1916 Spanish Mausers. I got "Gunsmith Specials" from different sources as an experiment. (I think they all came from the same source anyway, so maybe not much of an experiment). One had a broken firing pin, which was easily replaced. The others had a few stock problems, easily fixed. They will never be worth a lot, but it has been fun and instructive working on them.

There are a couple of other 1916 threads here on Calguns which have some good advice.
Here is a link to a good video for those who are thinking of ordering one.

IMO, Bolded is most likely cause. If you want to remove all doubt as to mechanical malfunction as possible causation. Measure FP protrusion.
