Note: 1911 type pistols purchased from CMP cannot be transferred to 03 FFL (curio and relic) license. BATF and the United States Army prefer the second background check be performed by a "store front" FFL dealer. Each customer purchasing a 1911 type pistol from CMP will be subjected to two NICS background checks, one performed by CMP and the other performed by the FFL dealer the pistol is being shipped to.

I wonder if the buyer has to pay both NICS fees or will CMP pay on their end?

For Californians, having to have C&R eligible pistols shipped and transferred through an 01 FFL is old news, so not sure why the fuss? I transferred a Tokarev earlier this year and with my 03 FFL and COE, I did the DROS and took it home the same day as allowed by Cal. DOJ. It helps to go to a dealer who knows their stuff and is familiar with C&R transfers, otherwise they can claim they don't believe you and hold the gun for the 10-day waiting period. With 03 FFL and COE, I can still have rifles shipped directly to me. This will help with internet ammo purchases come 1/1/2018.

Putting together my package now. Just renewed my GCA membership another two years as this will take a while... With my 03 FFL and Concealed carry license I've got the marksmanship requirements covered... Sure, there's no guarantee I'll even get into the 10,000 club, or be picked early enough to have a chance at service grade or above, but such is life. Good luck all.

Very unlikely that CMP will pay for that. They will probably tag that fee into the order form if and when your number is up.

I know that folks have said that the 1911s are over 50 years old, but this statement has me a little worried. What other reason would they not be able to transfer them to a 03FFL holder?

They are certainly C&R eligible, but CMP does not want to transfer them as such and ship them directly to people's homes where possible, for fear of another "mass-shooting" event, this time involving 1911s shipped directly to people, after ONLY one round of NICS vetting...

They are trying to cover their basis against the liberals who are for gun-free America.

I did email them today to confirm the lifetime status on the marksmanship requirement. As I would like confirmation for other potential customers.

Also I guess a moot point now for me in particular as I'm over 60 and have a C&R FFL and have been a GCA member for years.

Good to see they are going to control the flippers somewhat with purchase restrictions.

Just be glad that the CMP is being alowed to sell them at all. These fall outside of the scope of the law that created them. By law they are allowed to sell.....
The corporation may sell, at fair market value, caliber .22 rimfire and caliber .30 surplus rifles, air rifles, caliber .22 and .30 ammunition, repair parts, and other supplies to organizations affiliated with the corporation that provide training in the use of firearms.

So-someone correct me if I'm wrong...but other than the random number generator and one a year maximum,it looks like ordering one of these will be the EXACT same procedure as I used for ordering a Field grade M1 from the CMP last year.

                        Quote:
Potential purchasers will have to provide to CMP a new set of documents exhibiting: 1) proof of U.S. Citizenship, 2) proof of membership in a CMP affiliated club, 3) proof of participation in a marksmanship activity, 4) a new form 2A with notary, 5) successful completion of a NICS background check, 6) a signed copy of the 01 Federal Firearms License in which the 1911 will be transferred to. /END QUOTE.

                        I used passport for #1.
Signed up for Garand Collectors association for #2.(still active).
CMP accepted a copy of my Cali FSC card for #3.
Plus the normal notarizing forms and FFL copy sent.

It's quite simple and not a big deal at all...

They do a nics check before approving and then of course another when you dros in this craphole of a state.

                        ..

I went to the Advanced Maintenance Class in Anniston a couple of years ago and they talked VERY BRIEFLY about the 1911s. The only thing they would say is that they would be expensive.

It would be pretty cool to have a sidearm that went ashore in Normandy, got cold at the Chosin Reservoir, or accompanied some tunnel rats in Cu Chi; but I think I would rather spend my money on modern metallurgy and updated technology.

A hundred years from now when your Great, Great, Grandchild inherits your WWII vintage Colt 1911 that will then be a 200 year old design it will be priceless.

Can you imagine inheriting and holding the very blackpowder revolver that your Gr, Gr, Gr, Gr, Grandfather carried at Missionary Ridge or Gettysburg?

How cheap and insignificant will your 2nd DROS seem in the year 2117?

If you will not treasure and preserve a WWII Colt 1911, please, don't get one.

The price of $1000 is being tossed around. Does anyone know where that number came from?
