    FR8

I've been looking for a bolt action, 308/7.62 nato, military stocked rifle with peep sights. There don't seem to be very many around, the FR8 is about it (the FR7 is small ring so I'd be hesitant to shoot it a lot).

I came across one, $370 shipped.

What should I look out for on it? Is there anything else I should look at?

Ishapore 2As are also .308 bolt rifles. They're basically Lee Enfields.
    Because milsurp.

There are a couple other options in .308, but none with peep sights. I can't think of any other 7.62 NATO bolt gun with a peep sight.

Just like any other bolt gun - general condition, specifically bore condition if you want to shoot it.
$370 shipped is not bad for an FR-8 nowadays. The really good condition ones go for upwards of $500. I do tend to see them with a bayonet and scabbard.

        I say go for it.

That is a decent price if it is in good condition. Just be aware of the rear sight when you are cycling the bolt. If you don't pay attention, you can mash your hand between the sight and the bolt handle. Ask me how I know...

Another alternative is the Israeli Mauser (K98).

Ladder sights though I think - I'm not sure. Still worth considering.

This doesn't include bayonet or scabbard.

                .

Ishapore 7.62 NATO SMLE rifles should *NEVER* be fired using .308 Winchester ammunition!

Ditto what Dennis. Load your rounds to 7.62x51 specs.

Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

I would not worry about shooting 7.62 NATO in a FR-7 or FR-8. The small ring Mauser myth is a myth. 7x57mm Mauser actually has slightly higher pressures than 8x57mm Mauser. I wouldn't shoot .308 in either. At $370 if all matching and good condition I would buy it. Non matching can be found for under $300.

No it doesn't, unless you are looking at the wimpified US SAMMI specs for 8mm Mauser.

European C.I.P. specs for both are the same, 390.0 MPa (56,560 psi)

US manufacturers were afraid some dimwit would try and shoot a full power .323 through their .318 bore Gewehr 88 and blow up the gun, and hurt themselves. Europeans figured if you don't know what ammo your gun can safely shoot, you are a moron and deserve whatever happens to you.

Regardless, there are two specifications for what we call 8mm Mauser, the US SAMMI spec "8MM Mauser", which has a max pressure of 35K psi, and the CIP "8x57 IS" which has a max pressure of ~56K psi.

Both of which are well below the ~62K PSI spec for .308. Again, a small ring Mauser probably won't blow up using overpressure ammo, but it won't last as long as it would using appropriate ammo.

I thought the 7mm was 56,564. Regardless they are almost the same and I wouldn't worry about shooting 7.62NATO in either. That is what the Spanish shot out of them when they joined NATO. So yes there is a myth. It that goes back to over pressured Santa Barbara Ammo blowing up receivers and then suddenly the metal was weaker, not the ammo's fault. There is another thread here with a link that explains it better.

FR8 are great little rifles. And if you get the chance to buy one, at a decent price, go for it. When the Surplus Rifle forum was around, they would do complete disassembly, reassembly of different rifles. The FR8 was one of them. I knew the site owner and let him use my rifle for this.

If any of you, that own one would like a pdf copy of it, pm me, and I will send it to you.
