    Calling Mosin Experts!

Hi, everybody. I just got a "character marked" (ie, beat up) Mosin M44 and after cleaning it up tried loading some rounds to see how it cycled, and this is where I've run into problems.

First, I get rimlock. Not just when loading with stripper clips, either. When I load individual rounds, it may chamber two or three before locking again.

Second, I've noticed that when I'm loading individually and press the rounds down, the spring doesn't bounce back after being compressed by my thumb, and the rounds just sort of sit halfway down the magwell.

Third, sometimes the top round nose-dives into the feed ramp, usually when the spring doesn't bounce back and I load five anyway.

I think the solutions are a new magazine spring and a new ejector/interrupter, but I wanted to consult with y'all Mosin experts to see if I've missed something.

And please don't be like my father, who examined the rifle, pointed at the receiver, and said, "There's your problem. It says Russia on it."

Sounfs like weak spring, unless full of cosmoline, single loading push down and lide all the way back, repeat.

I'd agree with a new mag spring, as well as a new interrupter.

Haha, listen to your old man he's got good sense!

In all seriousness, rimlock seems to be a common problem with multiple causes. Before buying new parts make sure your current ones are completely and totally clean, especially in the movement areas. Dried cosmoline is hard to spot and when it is in the joints of the spring system and will cause it to slow down. Make sure your current parts are interfacing properly. The angle of the follower, sometimes it is slightly bent or doesn't sit at the correct level for proper feeding because of differences in tolerance or wear in the "C" hole area where the follower-magspring unit latches to the magazine body. Take a look at the width of the magazine body too. I have a mosin carbine that just needed a pinch to squeeze the magazine body a bit to close the gap between the cartridges and the interrupter. Lots of these were rearsenaled from different parts and put away for storage without much function checking

Finnish magazine and shim between magazine and stock, also may need to adjust interrupter.
This guy has a kits with Finnish mag or just the Finnish magazine.

Make sure it is completely clean. I had a Hungarian M44 that wouldn't chamber 7.62x54r rounds but would chamber 7.62x53r. Turned out it was hardened carbon build up. I cleaned it multiple times before I realized it. Took a steel pic to it and rifle chambered fine. Bolt needs to be completely stripped. For that matter the entire rifle needs to be stripped. Commie Grease hides everywhere. They didn't use Cosmoline that we did in America.

I load my 44 without any attention to where the rims are and don't have issues. I made sure it was completely clean and then lubed.

Yours seems to have some amount of inconsistencies so I'd say to make sure it's clear of cosmo & rust and that the mag spring & levers move smoothly.

I'd completely breaking down the magazine and clean it very good with mineral spirits. And probably try using a heat gun on the magazine joints to melts out stubborn cosmoline.

                    OFF TOPIC:

                    Calling other Mosin Experts,

I've seen an m91 mosin with a "deutsches reich" stamp. I assuming this indicates it was a WW1 german capture. How rare is this?

Fairly uncommon. Depending on the rifle, it's possible only the stock was part of a captured rifle, and may have been mated to the action at a later date.

Josh, Thanks for chiming in. I was on your site recently looking at your anti-rimlock and improvement kits that I thought might help me out.

I've watched the video but without my rifle handy I can't compare, so I'll watch again tonight and this weekend and post back if I have questions.

                            Thanks again!
