I pronounce it the way John C. Garand would, which is not the first one OP mentioned.

Its French, so "Gair-en". But either way is accepted now.

Well crap-I guess I have been saying it wrong.

I may just stick with M1 rifle

        Everyone knows who designed it.

The book US Infantry Weapons in Combat Personal Experiences from World War II and Korea is a collection of interviews with World War II and Korean War veterans talking specifically about the weapons they used in combat. Several of the veterans noted that nobody in the service called the rifle "the Garand rifle" (pronounced "Gerrund" by the way according to family members) in those days. Everyone called it "the M1 Rifle".

By the way, the weapons that received the most praise from veterans in the book were the M1 Rifle and the BAR for their reliability and firepower. The book is an interesting read and recommended.
          Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

If you are fortunate enough to be a Garand owner, by all means call it whatever you want.

The M1 was my issue piece and for 4 years ('59-'63), it was Guh-rand, but I do not recall it being called anything other than an "M1".

Even in high school Jr. ROTC it was called Guh-rand.

I wish I had my second issue M1 today, sweet rifle whether soft "a" or hard.

              To me, it's an M1.

To stir the pot a little more, John Garand was a French Canadian and in Garand the 'd' is probably silent.... Grand works for me... :-)

Of course in the ROTC they also say Guh-runt.

                      Yer all wrong. It's "U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, M1."
I always say "Guh-RAND" but I know that's not how the inventor pronounced his name. Since the paying customer was the US Government, I guess they get to call it whatever they want.

                        GAH-rand, like ER-rand.

Just because some low-speed, high-drag individuals (to include the drill sergeants, etc. of WW2 vintage) mispronounce(d) the name of the genius that gave us the wonderment that is the M1, Cal. 30, does not mean you should disrespect his Name.

No matter which way you say it, some snob will try to correct you. I just say M1 Grand and most snobs figure I’m not worth the effort and they leave me alone
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Nowadays everyone thinks the M1 is the M1A.

I dont think I have ever said M1 to someone without them thinking of the M1A. Most people dont even know about the M1 they just think its the M1A. And they dont even know that the M1A is not the same as the M14. And to make matters worse most people think Spingfield Armory Inc is the same as the real Springfield Armory. Even vets who should know better.

                            So much ignorance these days.

I just found out today that M16 is not the same as MI-6. And M-16 is not a real thing at all.
