    Luger doubling

    Fellow Calgunners!

EDIT...ok. So not full auto. Poster below said "doubling". But it wasn't designed to fire more than one round with one pull :P

Hope all is well. I decided to take the Luger P08 to the range today. Thought it would be cool to put a few rounds through it. I was load testing for 9mm, so it was a way to do both. I was using 3 and 4 rounds in each mag to assess how well it was doing in each pistol (an XD, a Sig and the Luger).

At one point, the Luger autofired two rounds. Thought it might be a fluke in keeping the trigger depressed or some such so kept with it. It was fine for a while, but later, it did it again. At that point, I put it away and continued with the other pistols.

I've had it for a year, shot it only sporadically (it's shooter grade, not collector grade), but this has not happened before. I am familiar with how the action works, but if there is an expert out there that can give me insight into any particular issues that might have caused it, I would be appreciative.

BTW...reloads were no hotter than the loads used previously, and were in fact a bit lighter than before (less powder but same COL and bullet weight).

    Also...the P08 is a 1918 Erfuhrt Luger chambered in 9mm.

    Thanks in advance

Sorry, I can't help you but if you go to the Luger forum, I'm sure they can help.

And even if it's a shooter, I wouldn't experiment with any hot loads. Too easy to break parts on the older Lugers.

        First step^^^This^^^

I did have a bad sear which caused a S&W M&P40c to do spontaneous double taps. Replacing it solved the problem, but i have no clue about a Luger but a good cleaning is always the best place to start.

Thanks for the replies. The cleaning is my first step, although I have taken care to do that each time. I'm considering taking right to the frame this time.

As far as hot loads, I actually load them pretty standard (115 gr / 4.2 TiteGroup / 1.145 COL / chrono'd 1150 fps). All things were the same, except I used .2 grains less powder than the same loads (4.2 grains this time).

I'll check the sear. The Luger is striker fired like a Glock, in what amounts to a distant 2nd cousin type of way.

The term you are looking for is "doubling"

"I shot my Luger this weekend and it doubled once".

It sounds like you were shooting handloads, were you shooting those before as well? No changes in primer brand or seating depth or any other measurements? Make sure there's not carbon build up tbat might be affecting the way some parts need to properly move

                Sounds like a worn sear.
I bought a non-matching Luger at a pawn shop earlier this year for a cheap price. It would fire twice with one pull of the trigger and also sometimes fire just going into battery. A previous owner may have tried to lighten the trigger pull and went too far. I replaced the sear and sear spring and now she runs like a charm. You can find parts in the Luger forum.

I would try giving it a good cleaning first, give the parts a good going over for signs of excessive wear. Inspect the ammo for high primers, Lugers are not well known for having a slam fire problem but they don't do well when they are dirty. Wear or reworked sear engagement does happen. I have fired several Lugers that were clean with good ammo and had them run the mag, everyone of them turned out to have minimum almost a negative sear engagement.HTH

Edit your post say my luger is doubling instead of saying I have an automatic weapon. luger.

                      Responses...

Edgerly: Thanks for catching that. I corrected it.

On Sears: I will take it completely apart and do both...clean and inspect. The pistol was overhauled by The Lugerman (Eugene) about 2 years ago, but I guess anything can happen.

Handloads: My loads, by chrono, are on par with factory and do not have stippled or blown primers. I'm hoping that's good news.

                      Still at it...
